This wasn’t over and I ran downstairs but he was nowhere to be seen. While I was looking around I ran into a girl in the parking lot who was also trying to find him. I asked her why she was looking for him and her only reply was a loud scream. Her gaze was locked onto something behind me. I turned and instinctively brought my hand up to protect my face. My left forearm and left side of my neck took the blow.
Joe just stood there with a crazy look on his face. A few seconds passed before I understood what had happened. I pulled what I thought was a knife out of my neck. Blood squirted from the cut - a lot of blood. Joe had chopped me in the neck with a meat cleaver.
I’m not even sure I consciously thought about what to do next. My mind went into survival mode and it was kill or be killed. Luckily for Joe I dropped the cleaver as I chased him into a fast-food establishment known as Tasty Freeze, where the fight continued. I lost a lot he of blood.
It was spurting everywhere. I was near passing out but I wasn’t giving up.
Two of Joe’s brothers came out of nowhere and I tore the cash register from the counter and threw it at them. I ran to the gas station on the corner in search of a weapon. They were coming in fast. I grabbed a large screwdriver and wrench, but don’t remember anything after that. I passed out from loss of blood.
The cops came to the emergency room for a statement. They had some people in custody and just wanted me to identify them. I told them to kiss my ass, but they weren’t going away. I told them to give me some paper. They handed me a form and I wrote that I had been walking along the road and that I slipped and fell into some bushes. The cop took the form, read it and looked pretty pissed off, but walked out without saying another word. He probably figured he’d see me again and deal with me then.

Not what I expected, but definitely worth reading
By Amazon Customer
This was a fascinating book to read. A LOT of action! I bought this book expecting to read a lot about the outlaw motorcycle culture. Unfortunately, the author didn't dwell on that aspect of his life very much. However, I was able to gain an understanding of an addict's mindset that I have never really been able to understand. I run an addiction program, and I now feel I can empathize more and understand how trapped my students are in the cycle. Aside from this, the book is very well written. I couldn't help but feel sorry for the author as he continually returned to prison because of his past mistakes. I have a student right now who has had very similar life experiences and is trying to break out of the mold. I enjoyed the story of redemption in this book, and would recommend it to anyone who wants to see if that lifestyle is worth it. I do hope that the author can find eternal redemption and lasting peace through Christ, not just the temporary kind we find here through willpower and good choices. Anyway, back on topic, great book, fascinating insight, and I hope that the author can get his message out.

Welcome to the real world...
By Ric Lawes
It's amazing that there are reportedly only 12 story lines in life and thus variations of them. Well I think Welcome To The Jungle is a book that everyone should read. In fact - it should be mandatory that every parent reads this and read for themselves what happens with children transiting into young adulthood. Their future relies upon what happens in their home lives.
A strong character, Al Harlow has done time. He has served a multitude of years lost - some of his own cause, others not. The system does not differentiate. Once a crim always a crim - seems to have been Al's life spec according to the US Justice system and thugs hiding behind a police badge. The story I am sure, is not the 'full' story but where this book takes you - is somewhere between reality, horror and disbelief.
Written by a surprisingly literate man, Al has brought out an incredible tale and the finality of being in Thailand where peace is expected and life is far more livable than the west, tends to leave the reader believing "why not?"
A great read, a great story and hat's off to Al. A biography of hardship and lost self esteem and yet the story continues. Al simply never gives up.
Highly recommended.

Welcome to the Jungle
By Shaun Delaney
My good friend, writer & actor, Al Harlow, wrote this book. Thanks to Al, i found myself in the very privileged position of being granted permission to read a few drafts before it went to print. I can guarantee that it is the best read you will have all year long if you enjoy hard and brutally honest true life stories. This account is characterized by openness and sincerity of expression. It focuses on Al's former benighted life of violence, drugs, underground cage fighting, guns and robbery.... and more..!! If you fancy taking your mind for a walk down the corridors of life on the wild side, seeing how our environment, circumstances and the failure of penal rehabilitation can all have a cold hand in shaping our present and future, you should invest in a copy today. If after reading this book you tell me it was a waste of money, i will personally question your sanity!! That's how good this book is. It's not for the fainthearted or those of a sensitive disposition that's for sure! You've been warned! Equally, be warned that this book is neither an author's attempt to try to claw back and justify what went before him nor a sententious, last grasp rant about a 'bad man turned good'. It's simply a man's soul laid bare in print. Al's implicit honesty in revealing the traffic-stopping events of his life is a refreshing and outstanding quality that is rarely found in other books of this genre. It's an easy read! Al's effective and fluid prose, coupled with its no-holds-barred style makes this creation a 'must read' for all of us out there who wonder why our lives have tuned out the way they have. Whether you're a solid '9 to 5' kind of guy, man of letters, housewife, doctor, carpenter or lawyer you'll enjoy it. As a final note, if you are on the slippery slope towards a life of crime and are wondering about the risks and consequences, you simply cannot ignore to read this book. If you can't read, get someone to read it to you. It might just save your life!
Well done Al Harlow. We're all proud of you as a writer, actor and friend.
