About the Author
Martha Hickman Hild received her PhD in Earth Sciences from the University of Leeds, UK, and has been a member of the American Geophysical Union since 1981. Early in her career, she co-directed a research laboratory and lectured in geology. She has worked as an editor in both technical and educational publishing, and as a news researcher. Since moving to Newfoundland, Martha has worked at Memorial University.

A Very Good Geology Guide

I bought this while on a trip to Newfoundland on the recommendation of a National Park Interpretive Guide and I am most happy I did. I did not know the first thing about rocks until I started reading the sections of this book that related to whichever part of the province I happened to be in and I fell fascinated into the world of geology. I had no idea it could be so interesting and Ms Hickman deserves all the credit for that. The writing is clear, free of jargon, and manages to weave a story about planetary development into each entry. I am unlikely to revisit Newfoundland but that doesn't matter because the book has given me a good basic outline of how to think about rock formations when I see them in my native Rocky Mountains.

Wonderful for touring &/or learning

This is an excellent book for learning about the unique geology of Newfoundland. The glossary helps to understand the technical parts. The pictures, all taken by the author are glorious. 48 treks are described in the book. In each she tells you how to arrive at the site, parking, the length of the trail and geologic and other features you will find there. It is extremely well written. If you are going to Newfoundland, take this tour guide with you. If not read it to learn about Newfoundland, eg. did you know that once the Appalacian range went up that far? The back page reveals how the author became involved in geology at age 7.

Newfoundland, geology - you need this guide

Used this in Sept 2012 touring Newfoundland. Spot on, lat/long coords for the GPS, great background info. Took us to great places. Not sure if there is a spiral bound addition (I thought we had one but...) which would be nice as it would lay flat. Get this if you are interested in rocks and fossils in Newfoundland. And be sure to go to the Johnson Geocenter in St. John's and plan to visit for 3 hours or so.
