Romanian-born Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957) is one of the most important names in 20th-century sculpture. This book accompanies a major retrospective exhibition of Brancusi's scultpure, drawings, and photographs organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. This work is illustrated throughout with photographs by the artist and images culled from a wide range of archival sources. The authors provide a detailed reassessment of Brancusi's work, incorporating and extending the revisions in scholarship that have been taking place since the last major retrospective in 1969-1970. The three major essays present information on such diverse issues as the sculptor's sources of inspiration, his formal approach, and the works' original presentation. Friedrich Teja Bach rejects the notion of Brancusi's oeuvre as hermetic, timeless and pure, and examines instead the heterogeneous combinations of form and material that make Brancusi's works compellingly paradoxical. Margit Rowell explores the sculptor's place in the artistic climate of Paris in the 1910s and 1920s and his rejection of dominant styles and subject matter in favour of non-Western sources, particularly Asian art. Ann Temkin traces the history of Brancusi's American patronage during his lifetime by such influential collectors as John Quinn, Katherine Dreier, James Johnson Sweeney, and Louise and Walter Arensberg. The plate section features full-colour reproductions of over 100 sculptures, with accompanying texts and visual references. In addition, 55 photographs by Brancusi in full-page duotone are shown alongside a major selection of his sculptures. There are also colour and black and white reproductions of over forty of his drawings - as well as prefatory essays on the photographs and drawings, a chronology, and bibliographic and exhibition listings.

Ethereal sculpture...

In the Sucevita Cloisters in Sucevita Romania a painted vault depicts a repeated rhomboid design in the shape of a pillar. Wooden funery columns in Loman Cemetery in Hunedoara, Transylvania, Romania also exhibit the rhomboidal design, albeit on a much more articulated, differentiated, and elaborate scale.
The Romanina artist, Constantin Brancusi brought the image of the rhomboid pillar to his wonderful sculpture the "Endless Column." For Brancusi, the rhomboid pillar was the embodiment of the "axis mundi", the world's axis, the tree of life, the pillar of the sky, the pivot of the universe. He once referred to these columns as stairways to heaven. Peoples all over the world have used the metaphysical pillar to link the earth and the sun, the source of all life.
The pillar image may not seem as fresh today as it did when arrived on the Paris art scene in the early 20th Century, but today, many art critics view the Romanian-born Parisian sculptor Brancusi as a major player in the Modern art movement. Along with Picasso, Brancusi introduced the notion of using traditional art forms in Western art--including 'totem' poles or sacred pillars, stone plinths, and other metaphysical carvings.
BRANCUSI was published by the Philadelphia Museum of Art in conjunction with a major retrospective of his work. Brancusi apparently deplored analytic attempts to understand his art (he felt his works should simply be "enjoyed" i.e. the fill the viewer with joy). However, the book is filled with material designed to help the reader "understand" and to a great extent, I feel it accomplishes it's goal.
The layout includes photographs showing how Brancusi may have found inspiration for his many birds, heads, and other organic and metaphysical works, including his rhomboidal columns. For example, one series of photographs shows Brancusi's famous "Muse" series executed in marble, bronze, and other media, and includes possible sources of inspiration such as a photograph and self-portrait of Margit Pogany. The various "Muse" may have evolved from a semi-formal bust similar to those executed by more traditional artists to a fully evolved "essence" of "head" more akin to Modern art.
I recommend this book to anyone who desires a pictoral record of the artist at work as well as many flat representations of his wonderfully formed three-dimensional sculptures and carvings.

Rennie then investigates how such facts were subsequently transformed artistically, by writers like Defoe and Stevenson, into realistic and fantastic fictions of various kinds: historical novels, popular melodramas, boyish adventures, Hollywood films. Rennie's aim is to watch, in other words, the long dissolve from Captain Kidd to Johnny Depp.

There are surprisingly few scholarly studies of the factual pirates--properly analyzing the basic manuscript sources and separating those documents from popular legends--and there are even fewer literary-historical studies of the whole crew of fictional pirates, although those imaginary pirates form a distinct and coherent literary tradition. Treasure Neverland is a study of this Scots-American literary tradition and also of the interrelations between the factual and fictional pirates--pirates who are intimately related, as the nineteenth-century writings about fictional pirates began with the eighteenth-century writings about supposedly real pirates. Cynthia Lightfoot is Professor and Head of Human Development and Family Studies at the Pennsylvania State University, Brandywine. Her published works focus on the sociocultural contexts of child and adolescent development, most recently, on teen pregnancy, identity development, and youth culture. Lightfoot has served on the editorial boards of Culture and Psychology and Cognitive Development, and as Vice President of the Jean Piaget Society. Her interest in children and adolescents was fueled by experiences working with emotionally disturbed and autistic children in schools and as a child development specialist in a program for teenage mothers.

Michael Cole is an all-University of California Professor of Psychology, Communication, and Human Development. His home base is University of California, San Diego, where he is the Director of the Laboratory of Comparative Human Cognition. For many years he spent his afternoons participating with children and undergraduates in development-enhancing after-school programs. He is an editor of the journal Mind, Culture and Activity. He has published widely on the role of culture and schooling in development for which he has been awarded honorary degrees at Copenhagen University and the University of Helsinki. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academies of Education (of the United States and Russia).

Sheila Cole is a former journalist who specialized in writing about families, children, development, and education. She is also a children's writer. Her most recent book offers a history of American childhood and is written for young people. She has also authored picture books, historical fiction, and novels for young adults. She participates in literacy programs for homeless adolescents.

So much better than 'parenting' books

I bought this book to help me understand my baby. I'm not studying child development. I was a bit wary at forking out about 10 times as much as the average parenting book costs for a textbook, but am so glad I did.

Parenting books tell you what you should and shouldn't do and I find them too prescriptive. What I want to do is make decisions that are best for my family and baby, but to do this in an informed way - and this book is great for that. I was worried it might be too dry or heavy, but I actually found it far more readable than the average parenting book, it is beautifully written and filled with fascinating colour photos. It was wonderful, for example, to notice a picture of a baby blowing bubbles, because my baby had just started blowing bubbles like crazy - and then read and understand what that was all about. Also, unlike most parenting books which are padded out by cartoons or anecdotes that basically repeat the author's points, none of the information in this book is repetitive or extraneous. It has increased my confidence as a mother and helped me sort through all the conflicting advice new mothers receive.

I have shared this book round my mother's group. One of the other mothers, who has a science background, said she wasn't impressed at some of the studies referred to because there were far too many variables. Nevertheless, she too found it extremely useful and is ordering her own copy of the book.

Thiw is an excellent review of child development research going beyond the original bokk by Cole and Cole. It should be in the curriculum of undergraduate students of psychology and related fields e.g. special education.

The book was helpful

It was a great text book for psychology major students, especially for learning developmental psychology.
It was a used book, but it was very clean, and just like a new book, which I appreciated very much.
The Development of Children is a helpful book and very worth reading sometimes no matter whether you are in psychology major, because it is related to children's development, which is practical and useful in life. :)

About the Author
Bethany Freel is an American Council on Exercise certified Personal Trainer, PoleMoves certified Pole Instructor, and Nia (Neuromuscular Integrative Action) White belt. She has lived in Alaska for the last 11 years where she is an engineer and pole instructor. Bethany has been involved in athletics and strength training for much of her life from recreational and competitive sport to compulsive training and overtraining. With the desire to become a superb, fit athlete, she worked out long and hard. She always ran the extra mile and pushed through the pain, only to see stagnated results and persistent injury. Through research, experiences in pole and training, and a journey of personal growth, she has emerged from the damaging and unnecessary practice of overtraining with a passion for learning and spreading the word regarding optimum training practice, overtraining, intuitive-ness in exercise, and body respect.

Pole Athletes Should Read This.

This book is well researched and well written. I have trained and spoken with many pole athletes and this is information that many of them do not know. If they would follow the guidelines discussed in this book, they would improve their pole skills.

Great resource, comprehensive coverage, a must-have for NP's starting their own practice

In my opinion, this book, along with Nurse Practitioner's Business Practice And Legal Guide are absolute "must-have" references for any nurse practitioner starting a private practice (and good to have for those already in private practice as well).

I had originally bought a few general "Starting your own business" type guide books and all fell short and were disappointing. Most were just a survey or very superficial overview more appropriate for folks dreaming about starting a business and wondering what is involved, but just not comprehensive enough for the serious individual actively starting up a new business. I gave up on finding a good reference book and ended up consulting an attorney and a CPA to have the questions answered that I needed regarding business structure, various legal issues and tax concerns. Shortly thereafter I found and bought this book and I really wish I'd found it before spending the money to consult the attorney and CPA as a good portion of my questions to them were covered in this book.

As you can see this book is pretty comprehensive and covers a good portion of what you need to know to get started. I suggest you pair it with the Buppert book I mentioned above, as that has a much stronger legal perspective and I think you'd be pretty comprehensively informed between the two. I have found them both invaluable during the process of starting up my private practice.

This book is inspirational. Reading about people who stood up for what they believed in (right or wrong), helps me to understand why it is not always expedient to follow the crowd. Sometimes, we need to stand up and say, "This is not right.". We as voting members of this great republic must stand up for what we believe to be right, and not just follow what we are told by whoever is in power. The profiles helped my as a young man to realize being true to yourself is more important than being a follower of what others may say, think or do. I bought this book for a friend. Courage Defined

John F. Kennedy was an award winning writing before he became President. While I have long intended to read his best known book, I have only recently acted on the opportunity. Although my primary interest in American history is relegated to more recent history, I found "Profiles in Courage"to be a very pleasurable read.
Kennedy chose a select group of senators with courageous motives to be the subject of his book. The time periods of the senators are as diverse as their deeds. John Q. Adams is the discussed for his valor in voting against the Federalist principles he was elected to defend. His actions made him unpopular in his home state of Massachusetts. Daniel Webster is noted for his attempts to keep the union together. Thomas Hart Benton refused to allow Missouri to leave the union while combating the Kansas-Nebraska Bill. Sam Houston turned most of the state of Texas against himself by refusing to allow Texas to leave the union. Edmund Ross perhaps received more abuse than any of the senators mentioned in the book for being the vote that prevented Andrew Jackson's conviction on impeachment charges. Lucius Quintas Cincinnatus Lamar became the unpopluar southern senator to bridge the gap with the North in the Reconstruction. George Norris caused an end to the political machine the senate had become in his time. Robert Taft became to unpopular spokesman for the illegalities of the Nuremberg Trials. Most of these men sacrificed their political careers for their stance. These stories are refreshing in an era of partisan politics. It is difficult to image similar acts today.
Although Kennedy was never allowed to reach his potential as a President, he proves to be an accomplished writer. Kennedy unintentionally raises questions about the functioning of the senate and government in general. It must be questioned if a democracy is truly working if the main goal of a senator or elected official is to be reelected. With reelection at stake, can any elected official vote for the best interest of the country if it is unpopular with the people? Government is intended to act in the people's best interest. It must be considered if appointed senators were more effective than elected senators. While there may be no easy answer to this, pondering the question and potentially making changes is an example effective democracy.
