The Anatomy of the Ship Series Is Dead! Long Live the Anatomy of the Ship Series!

"Anatomy of the Ship" has long been one of my favorite book series, and I was quite pleasantly surprised to learn that the first new "Anatomy" in ten years was in the works. This book was originally intended for publication in 2008, but something must have fallen by the wayside. I was awfully disappointed in the "Bismarck" and "Constitution" anatomies, and was hoping that this book might breathe some new life into the series.

How is it? I'd say "pretty good" on the whole. It's not as extraordinarily detailed as some of the better "Anatomies," but it's a step above many of the weaker ones. The inside of the front and back covers are put to good use, presenting fold-out interior and exterior profiles of the hull, and two very nice paintings by Geoff Hunt. The biggest formatting change is the consolidation of the Introduction and Photographs chapters, reducing the amount of cross-referencing required compared with the other anatomies. "The Tudor Warship Mary Rose" contains a great deal more photographs and period artworks of the ship than earlier anatomies, including a large number of photographs of artifacts recovered from the wreck. The quality of the drawings ranges from exceptional to decent. The section on hull construction is probably the most detailed, right down to exploded views of gunport construction, cross-sections of a summercastle knighthead, and structural plans of each deck. Throughout the book are other examples of close-up details, including the lacing of bonnets to the mainsails, the rigging of the masthead of the ship's boat, and three-view drawings of nine types of rigging blocks. The final chapter even includes a set of plans depicting the remains of the ship as currently seen on display in Portsmouth, England.

As exciting as it may be to finally have a brand new "Anatomy," some of the plans are rather bleak looking and lack drawing keys. The plans of the standing and running rigging are probably this book's low point, consisting entirely of three unlabeled 1/192 scale profile views of the ship. The drawings of the ship's guns are very nicely done, but again, not a single one is labeled. I know that any seasoned maritime enthusiast should be able to identify parts of a ship's guns and rigging without any hand-holding, but I can't figure out why so many plans in this book are either completely unlabeled, or rather sparsely so.

Although some of the omissions are rather frustrating, I'm happy to see one more book in this series. Doug McElvogue is the former Senior Research Fellow & Archaeologist of the Mary Rose Trust, so I'd imagine that these plans constitute an exceptionally accurate rendition of how the ship appeared in 1545. In fairness, I wish I could give this book 3 1/2 stars. As an "Anatomy," this is somewhat of a middle tier title. However, there's enough interesting supporting material here to bump up my rating from three to four stars.

Bigger and Better

I've loved every installment in this series and Legacy is no different. Mr. Kellen takes everything I enjoyed in the previous books and expands it tenfold. From the relatively small and narrow focus of Elegy, Christopher pulls back the camera and gives us a taste of the world beyond in this novel length adventure.

The world is bigger, the battles are bigger, the lore is expanded and the scope of the story shifts from merely following D'Arden towards encompassing characters from the previous stories and sets the stage for some truly epic adventure and drama to come.

As an author Christopher has expanded his skills so greatly that this almost feels like its from a different writer. As much as I loved Elegy, there were a few clunky passages which are to be expected from a first time author. However Legacy is lean, mean and any rough edges seem to have been polished away.

I won't talk about the story because its well described in the item description. However I will say that some great battles, monsters and settings await in Legacy. I don't know how long he intends to continue this series but the story could go in a million different directions by its end. Legacy is another great installment in the adventures of D'Arden and I already eagerly await the next book. If you're a fan of fantasy, sword and sorcery or the works of other great indie authors like David Dalglish definitely pick this series up, its a blast.

Keeps getting better.

I've been eagerly awaiting this book since I finished Elegy (The Arbiter Codex) and heard that Mr. Kellen had a sequel in the works.

We pick up shortly after the last book left off, and Kellen doesn't give our heroes any chance to rest. Bigger problems abound. Actions sequences are gritty and even more epic. We find out more about the world, the history of the Arbiters, meet new characters, and some characters from the other Eisengoth stories, which I was VERY excited about.

The most impressive aspect of this book and Mr. Kellen's writing of it, is he wraps up everything very nicely. The book's major conflict stems from choices D'Ardan Tal make in book one, and each step of the way, the character's choices affect the outcome of the book. The most impressive part of this book is that, while it leaves things open to go in any number of directions for future books, it ties up all the problems and questions that arise from this book and the previous volume in the series. I see this so rarely in traditionally published fantasy, where it seems that editors are afraid to force the writers tie up the loose ends so they can make sure people will want to buy future books. I applaud Kellen for being able to tie up the plots and conflict central to this book while leaving us knowing that there is more, so much more to come.

As someone who is well versed in both traditional and Indie fantasy fiction, I do not think if this as an Indie/self-published book, or Christopher Kellen as an Indie writer; I consider Christopher Kellen one of fantasy's shining new stars. If you don't read him, you're missing out.

Another strong book by Mr Kellen.

Elegy provides more information about the Arbiters and how the division between good and evil occurred. While the ending of this book seemed abrupt, I would still recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy novels. Have downloaded book 3 and can't wait to start reading.

One of the Most Important Texts of Traditional Western Magic/the Grimoire Tradition!

First of all, please forgive me for this review being somewhat lengthy, but a work such as the present title deserves nothing less and so I hope you will indulge me.

For those who are truly passionate about traditional western magic (i.e., the grimoire tradition), Francis Barrett’s classic “The Magus” is absolutely indispensable! Ever since its publication by Lackington, Allen in London, in 1801, this work has had a massive impact on the occult community and it is one of the most influential pieces of literature within its field. It inspired, among others, the famous French occultist and author, Eliphas Levi (Alphonse Louis Constant, 1810-1875), as well as the founders of one of the most famous of all esoteric societies known today, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

Barrett’s purpose in compiling “The Magus” was to present a “complete” handbook of occultism (with a strong emphasis on magic) that would make readily available a collection of the most important teachings of occult/magical theory & philosophy along with the mechanics – as well as examples – of practical application. And in my humble yet honest opinion, he most certainly succeeded in doing exactly that!

Regrettably, however, “The Magus” has undergone a lot of unfavorable publicity over the past several years; this typically at the hands of unqualified individuals, falling under such a title due to the fact of obviously never actually having read the book they are so eager to cast aside. The occult community of today is filled with remarks like ‘A wonderful work of plagiarism’, ‘A bastardization of Agrippas “Three Books of Occult Philosophy”’, and so forth, along with comments on how Barrett stole the information mostly from Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa’s “De Occulta Philosophia Libri Tres” without accrediting him.

All of this is – with all due respect, yet the truth must stand fast and for all to see – nothing but the same unqualified statements that are merely being rehashed by individuals who, like the original commentators, have apparently never bothered to READ the book! Please allow me to spend a few moments of this in defense of a historical work that deserves our respect, as a work important to the study & practice of traditional western magic as well as the cultural treasure that the text is.

‘To steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own: use (another's production) without crediting the source’.

Now please allow me to quote a passage from “The Magus” itself:

‘we have, at a vast labour and expence, both of time and charges, collected whatsoever can be deemed curious and rare, in regard to the subject of our speculations in Natural Magic – the Cabala – Celestial and Ceremonial Magic – Alchymy – and Magnetism…’

This if from page v of the preface of Barrett’s work – the very PREFACE!!! Barrett is mentioning already here that the book is a collection of teachings and nowhere is he downright claiming that this is a work entirely of his own. However, I can see how some people may feel that I am just projecting and seeing what I want to see in this passage so please allow me to support it with more “evidence”:

‘To which we have annexed a great variety of notes…’

Further remarks indicating that this work was not one of his own writing (above quote also from the preface, page v). We shall continue, however:

‘…all of which we have collected out of the works of the most famous magicians, such as Zoroaster, Hermes, Apollonius, Simon of the Temple, Trithemius, Agrippa, Porta (the Neapolitan), Dee, Paracelsus, Roger Bacon, and a great many others; to which we have subjoined our own notes…’

This quote (on page vii of the preface) follows immediately after Barrett has gone through an overview of what the book contains. And if you recall the definition of plagiarism, this passage here clearly abolishes all such claims regarding “The Magus” as Barrett is clearly listing the writings of Agrippa as being part of the contents of his book – thus NOT presenting any of this as his own, or using material from Agrippa’s books without accrediting him. He even ads – again – that these writings of other occultists are then merely accompanied by his own notes.

As one last quote, if you would indulge me; something that does not even require any additional commentary from me as everything is as obvious as human reason can ask for (at the very end of page 50 of Book I, Part I):

‘The Author having, under the title of Natural Magic, collected and arranged every thing that was curious, scarce, and valuable, as well his own experiments, as those in which he has been indefatigable in gathering from the science and practice of Magical Authors, and those the most ancient and abstruse, as may be seen in the list at the end of the Book, where he has put down the names of the authors, from which he has translated many things that were never yet published in the English language, particularly Hermes, Tritemius, Paracelsus, Bacon, Dee, Porta, Agrippa, &c. &c. &c.; from whom he has not been ashamed to borrow what he thought and knew would be valuable and gratifying to the sons of Wisdom, in addition to many other rare and uncommon experiments relative to this art.’

This defense of Francis Barrett’s “The Magus” is important, I believe, for a proper review to be done due to the general misconceptions and general spreading of false information that may otherwise feed further possibilities of misunderstandings about a book as important as this. As I have said, I personally find “The Magus” to be indispensable to the grimoire tradition as we have, in this work, a collection of the best of the best: Agrippa’s occult and magical theory & philosophy – the “how does it work?/why does it work?” behind the purely practical instructions of the grimoires; the operational mechanics of magic as found in pseudo-Agrippa’s “Fourth Book of Occult Philosophy”; and the two grimoires, “The Heptameron” and Johann Trithemius’ “The Art of Drawing Spirits Into Crystals”, to complete the package with practical examples.

Much of the core-material on magic found in Agrippas 1533 classic, “De Occulta Philosophia Libri Tres” – a treatise that was not readily available in the late 1700s/early 1800s – was made more easily accessible by being printed almost verbatim by Barrett. And the famous – and, to some extent, infamous – so-called fourth book, or “Of Occult Philosophy, or of Magical Ceremonies – The Fourth Book”, by pseudo-Agrippa, which was basically a more practice-focused distillation of what Agrippa covered in his three books, had now also become easily obtainable to the occultists of the time. Barrett’s goal of making difficult to find, and costly, teachings of occultism – especially magic – readily available, and all collected into one volume, edited to read as one single text rather than bits and pieces of this & that chopped up and glued together, was fully accomplished and he should be commended for it rather than shunned. He did nothing wrong and everything right, and the occult community of today owes him more than they will ever realize.

I still recommend “The Magus” as the first and most important text to any and all who wish to venture into the study & practice of traditional western magic as it basically has everything one needs to understand it (with sufficient study of the treatise, naturally) as well as practice it; as mentioned earlier, it even includes a couple of grimoires to give clear examples of things that have been covered earlier in the text. While Agrippa’s three books are still of immense importance due to these containing even more than what Barrett included therefrom in “The Magus”, the former ought to be studied later and Barrett’s work first simply due to the latter having the best of both worlds: the theory & philosophy as well as the practice thereof.

One last thing I wish to say… the very best edition available of this work at the present time is, without a doubt, that of Red Wheel/Weiser (my own copy of which I purchased nearly a decade and a half ago, back when the publishing house was just called "Samuel Weiser, Inc."), due to this being a facsimile of the original rather than a re-typing of the book. While the Weiser edition is but a mere paperback (and ought to be a beautiful, properly bound hardcover), I still find it preferable to have a facsimile that retains the early 19th century charm – with old style “s” printing and all – rather than something that has been entirely reset in modern type.

As for the contents, I believe this is better left to the individual simply looking in the inside of the book here on Amazon.com and reading through the viewable Table of Contents, rather than my rehashing it here.

Essential for the Occultist in You!

I can confidently place Francis Barrett's The Magus along with the greatest of all magical/occult books in mainstream press: Dictionary of Angels by Gustav Davidson, Three Books of Occult Philosophy by Agrippa, Black Magic by AE Waite, and Aleister Crowley's 777. For those that are hardcore occultists or even those who are merely curious, this book has alot to offer everyone.

Excellent insight into the mind of professional footballer in Ireland and the precarious existence of it all and how people react when it goes wrong, as it often has in Ireland.

Lots of interesting anecdotes and a window into darker times at the football club, but disaster that ultimately led to the club returning stronger that it ever might have hoped to be.

Fantastic book. Gives amazing insight into a very turbulent time for a club, and all the inner workings. Very easy to read and you don't need to be a fan of Cork City to enjoy it (even though I am, so it helps even more)

Excellent preperation for the DELF B1 exam

This book will familiarize you and prepare you for the DELF B1 exam. The exercises closely resemble the exam.

Your French should be at or near the B1 level in order to get the most from this book. This is not a teaching book. It's an exam preperation book.

If your French isn't quite at the B1 level, then I recommend working through this book together with a teacher.

I personally found oral comprehension to be the most difficult part of the test. I understand this is normal for most test takers. Listen to as much French material as you can. Yabla helped me a lot.

"(Bob):Paul McGovern has his own side of the story to tell. I had mine. If Paul's recollection of events differ from mine, then maybe we just saw it differently. Paul did not see everything I saw in OSI. Paul was not on a distribution list for OSI information. Paul only saw information regarding NTS or the complex. Any other information was compartmented within OSI. I resent some of Paul's statements about what I did or did not know. Paul knew I was involved in counterintelligence operations to protect classified programs. He sanctioned it and was involved in it. Lay people call it disinformation. People in the know calls it, "Counterintelligence-Protection-Operation (CPO).

Paul might know most of the story but he does not know it all, at least from my stand point. I read the same historical data that he read in the Digest. I don't remember it the same way he does, although it is pretty close. I agree, no MJ12 documents are listed in the annex to the Digest. But not all information regarding the program or our historical views are contained in the Digest. I can think of numerous things. None of Blue Book Files are contained in the Digest! Project Blue Book is mentioned but none of the files, especially file 13, are not enclosed. How can Paul explain that? What about the exchange program. None of that is mentioned in the Digest. Paul mentioned some emails ago that Yellow Book contained the visitors story. Well, Paul, as you must know, the Yellow Book only went up to just before Roswell. Ebe 2, provided us with additional information from that point on. JROD was a codename for an Entity, I agree, not Ebe 2 but another one. I read the information and I know Paul isn't correct in his statement about JROD.

As for abductions, I agree with Paul 100%. I did the investigations, about two years worth. I studied the phenomena. I did not find one single piece of evidence to support abductions. The FBI did an extensive investigation, as did NSA and DIA and nothing of facts were found.

The Gate 3 incident occurred in the early 80s, not 2002! you got that wrong.

As for Paul's statements about you, they are his statements. Just because your information don't always agree with his, probably most of the time, doesn't make everything you say false.

I don't agree with his evaluation of the book. I think about 65% of the book is accurate. The remaining 35% is either distorted or wrong. You can correct that information in an updated version.

Rick C. Doty, Author, Consultant & Writer: In the spring of 1978 he was recruited by the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) to become an agent. He passed all the necessary requirements and tests and was sent to the AFOSI Academy in Washington, D.C. Successfully graduating from the academy he was sent to District 17, OSI, Kirtland AFB New Mexico in May 1979. During that first year he was briefed into a special program. How did it all get started? After some 20 + years for my co-author Rick Doty and 18 years for me we still ask that question considering all the turmoil associated with the subject. As we all know in life you can ‘run into’ a subject. Well, you might say I ran into the subject of UFOs while working as an FTD Analyst in the areas of Theoretical & Applied Physics at the Foreign Technology Division (FTD), Wright-Patterson AFB OH in the summer of 1985. Ever since the end of the Cold War FTD had undergone several name changes with the latest being the National Air & Space Intelligence Center or NASIC.

Good Contemporary review of the UFO Situation

I almost didn't purchase this book due to a lone bad review. In it, the reviewer stated that the information was freely available on the Internet, and thus the book was a poor mish-mash of unverified statements obtained from the internet. ha! Don't be fooled. Correct or incorrect, the authors have done their best to crack open the ultra black world of contemporary Ufology...

Yes, I suppose that one could find the information on the internet if they had hours and hours of time, not to mention the research skills necessary to do so... Not everyone has this ability. Most of us carry a full weight of work and home responsibilities and the inconvenience of a comprehensive internet search is unlikely and very impractical. For me, the small price of the book greatly outweighed the months of time to acquire the information on my own.

That being stated, the information is exactly what you would expect. The key players are represented and the "state of the art" understanding of the UFO issue is presented in all it's glory. There will be few surprises for the knowledgeable reader of this subject. yet, it is a great asset in that it is comprehensive and serves as an excellent resource for digging further on to the subject matter. Truth be told, the internet is the only information source many of us use for our information source. That include technical research and work issues.

Welcome to the real world of the UFO situation. All of us players in this arena are now approaching retirement and we are tired of the black world of compartmentalization. We yearn to know the entire story. many of us only know the bits and pieces that we have experienced while in the service or when we worked at the secret facilities. we want to understand what was behind the curtain. We want to know exactly what happened when we walked into the electronic field. We want to know where the technical documents that we studied came from.

Truthfully, other people like me, made the drawings for the technical illustrations. Other technical writers gave the descriptions of the alien devices. Other Engineers wrote the equations and did the testing. Do you actually think that all of us have decided to be quiet and accept the agreements that we signed when we were 21? Now we are nearing retirement. We are through multiple divorces. We have children that we put through college and are looking at the lives that we lived. We have only one way to get our information out. That is through the internet.

If you want to know what is going on...read this book. I can't vouch for all of it. But enough of the things that I do know as fact are in here. It is a bit too limited to the black projects associated withe the CIA, DOD and AF. It leaves out the very significant dimensional transportation work of the Navy (I am NOT referring to the Philly experiment) . But in time that will come out as well. Read it. Absorb it. You will not be sorry...

After having read the many top-notch reviews written here on Amazon, I cannot think of much else to add--it is all said so well in the rest of the reviews. However, I must point out that I still have a "bad taste in my mouth" from reading Linda Moulton Howe's An Alien Harvest years ago, because of the disinformation role played by (co-author) Richard Doty during her visit to Kirtland AFB back in 1983. Can we trust Mr. Doty now? Plus, I still remember the TV show "UFO Cover Up Live" and the joking comments of the host after Falcon (Doty?) mentioned how the EBE's like strawberry ice-cream.
There are a few inconsistencies involving the planet of origin of the EBE's, and in the location of the 1964 Holloman landing. Plus, can we really believe that project SERPO happened? How could humans make it back and forth to another star system in such a short time?
So, as with most books on UFO's, there is much information presented, but we cannot know for sure what, and how much, is true. It would certainly appear that this book has more truth than fantasy--let's hope!

UFOs and the U.S. Government

If events at Roswell were Extraterrestrial and if as a result our governemnt instituted a covert program to study the problem of UFOs and an alien presence on the planet a hidden history would result. Robert M. Collins gives us a look into that history with the help of a number of named insider sources, documents, and personal investigative experiance. Newly updated with additional material and fastinating bits of information this is not just another UFO book! People who have been asking questions about "The Aviary" contact with "EBES" and the mysterious MJ-12 will find numerous answers and information here. I was personnaly aware of some of this information having worked closely with researcher Bill Moore in the 80's and early 90's. Other fasinating tales such as the "failed" disclosure process in Washington D.C. were new and exciting to me! The documented section on Vaults under Wright-Patterson AFB as presented here is a significant research contribution by this author. Is this book controversial? You bet! Can you dismiss the credentials and experiance of the people involved? No you can't! Read the book and decide for yourself.
