About the Author
Kristopher Norris is a Baptist minister and PhD candidate in Theology and Ethics at the University of Virginia. He holds degrees from UNC, Duke, and Emory, and once won an eighth-grade geography bee. Kris lives in Charlottesville, Virginia. Sam Speers studied Religious Studies at the University of Virginia, where he was also involved in InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. He is a music lover and a former swim coach, and he knows every line from The Princess Bride. Sam also lives in Charlottesville.

Blends Politics and Faith in a Authentic Way

Literature that provides a wise discourse on both church and politics is difficult to find, which is why this book is such a breath of fresh air. Even when discussing difficult issues facing the church, such as political identity, support for gay marriage, and racial barriers, the authors analyze different churches’ approaches with understanding and not a drop of judgement. Very impressive. Especially valuable was how the authors described their own journey visiting the churches, not only in a physical sense, but also in a spiritual sense—it made the narrative refreshingly authentic and unpretentious. Leaving the churches aside, it was also nice how the authors included their own personalities in the story—although it sounded like they couldn't spend more than FIVE minutes together before launching into a brotherly debate on theology!

I’m not sure if I could handle a trip with these guys, but I highly recommend Kingdom Politics.

A MUST READ FOR ALL U.S. CITIZENS!

In While We Still Have Time: The Perils Of Electronic Voting Machines And Democracy's Solution: Publicly Observed, Secure Hand-Counted Paper Ballots (HCPB) Elections Dr. Sheila Parks makes a very compelling (but scary) argument, backed up with lots of convincing evidence, showing that ALL electronic voting machines are susceptible to fraud and demonstrating that many have been tampered with in recent elections.

This book is an absolute MUST READ for all citizens who are concerned that ALL votes are counted as cast. Dr. Parks shows that it is impossible to prove that electronic voting machines used in elections have NOT been tampered with. Her book is a chilling reminder that all ordinary citizens must continue to be actively involved in the political process if we want to avoid the demise of our democracy. The most precious right we have as citizens is the right to vote and have each vote be counted as intended.

I highly recommend this book. It is a quick read, and includes many practical steps to take to advocate for publicly-observed, secure, hand-counted paper ballots (HCPB) elections. Several chapters provide case studies of four precincts in Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire. These case studies are based on Parks' observations in real time of elections being counted by hand, and demonstrate that it is actually cheaper, faster, and safer to run HCPB elections than to run elections using voting machines, which cost between $3K to $5K per machine, not counting the cost to store, maintain, and upgrade them regularly-- or the cost to our democracy of having votes stolen!

Parks is an expert on the topic of HCBP elections. In fact, her research since 2000 has impelled her to put forth protocols to implement HCPB elections nationwide (see the last chapter)-- but we must first get our elections supervisors to see the importance of doing so! To aid in that endeavor, in the Introduction Parks provides a two-page list of concrete actions that can be taken by ordinary citizens.

This is too important an issue for American citizens to sit on their hands over. We must insist and demand by every way we can imagine that our government stop using electronic voting machines now and forever -- and While We Still Have Time provides much useful information and guidance in doing so. For instance, in it, Parks points out that the United States could learn a lesson from The Netherlands and Ireland: both countries have already eliminated electronic voting machines, and Ireland actually sold all of their machines as scrap!

I highly recommend that you read this book and share it with your friends, family, and colleagues. We must not sit back and watch while our elections are rigged!

How to steal a democracy....steal the power of the vote.

There is nearly no attention being paid, anywhere, to the most obvious of reasons for a shift to the extreme right world wide. People do not want wars for profit; they do not want to abandon their fellow citizens to the fates when they are homeless, jobless, and sick; they do not want to be made sick by a polluted environment; they do not want to live by the whim of corporate rule. Yet we see this clear shift and cannot understand the disconnect.

Sheila Parks offers us a chance to examine the mechanism of the vote and to see how easy it is to change the world if you convince people that they can express their desires by voting on electronically programmed machines. Through these inscrutable devices, people useful to the cause of corporate hegemony can be safely installed into strategic positions of government. Voila! The perfect crime. What makes it so perfect? You cannot be caught because all evidence of secret programming can be removed and leave no trace.

Anyone who reads this book will never again assume all is well with this secretive and diabolic system. In fact, I would not want to rely on electronic voting to honestly count my vote, even if there were never any theft taking place. I don't want a system that would allow such theft to occur ever. The fact that it could happen is enough to eschew them and vote in the only way that makes sense. Vote by hand on a paper ballot, count that ballot with others at the voting precinct on the night of the vote, and make it as public and open as can be.

Sheila says she has witnessed 1000 votes being counted by twelve people, with a complicated ballot, and checked as well, in four hours. Done. Safe. Impossible to mess with because the result is immediately out there. All on the up and up. Do you want to get complicated with a process that is, after all, anonymous, unlike other computer transactions that we perform every day? We cannot track our vote, so we have to assiduously track the process. We can always see if the bank made a mistake. But never with our vote. Because it is anonymous. There are a thousand good reasons why hand counting paper ballots would benefit our nation and the world. Sheila Parks explains those reasons and makes it seem eminently doable.

I love computers. I have programmed them since 1963. But they are being used to steal our elections. They pose inherent, unacceptable risks to our election processes.

Dr. Sheila Parks is a staunch advocate for a solution to these risks. She founded the Center for Hand-Counted Paper Ballots in Boston, and her new book: "While We Still Have Time, the Perils of Electronic Voting Machines and Democracy's Solution: Publicly Observed, Secure Hand-Counted Paper Ballots (HCPB) Elections" is essential. Dr. Parks is a tireless and fierce advocate for accurate and secure elections. She documents the proven fact that any type of computer used for voting can be and has been hacked, resulting in fraudulent reports of vote totals and stolen elections. Both DRE's (touch-screen voting machines) and optical scanners that read paper ballots are implicated. No foolproof procedures or technologies exist that can secure the votes cast or counted on these machines. The gold standard to ensure that votes are counted as cast is hand-counted paper ballots (HCPB), using procedures already well established in Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.

This topic is extraordinarily complex. Yet on every page, Dr. Parks' intense devotion to democracy and to our country shines through. She presents facts, plus a great admiration for other activists, and even poetry. Her extensive notes are a comprehensive reference to Election Integrity literature. About the Author
Yaron Ezrahi studied political science and philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and holds a PhD from Harvard University. He has served as an advisor on science policy to the White House, the US National Academy of Science, the OECD (1969-70), the Israeli Academy of Science and Humanities (1973-83) and the Carnegie Commission on Science (1992). He is the recipient of a National Jewish Book award and of the Israeli Political Science Association's Prize for Life Work (2009). He has been a member of the Hebrew University faculty since 1972. Other appointments include a fellowship at the Center of Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University and visiting professorships at the University of Pennsylvania, Duke University, Harvard University, Princeton University, ETH Zurich and Brown University. His works include The Descent of Icarus: Science and the Transformation of Contemporary Democracy; Technology, Pessimism, and Postmodernism (edited with Everett Mendelsohn and Howard Segal); Rubber Bullets: Power and Conscience in Modern Israel; and Israel Towards a Constitutional Democracy (with M. Kremnitzer). He is a co-founder and board member of The Seventh Eye, Israel's leading journal of press criticism in Hebrew. His work has also appeared in Minerva, Science Studies, Social Research, Inquiry, Foreign Affairs, Transactions of the New York Academy of Sciences and The New York Times Magazine.

About the Author
Imke de Pater is a Professor in the departments of Astronomy and Earth and Planetary Science at the University of California, Berkeley, and is affiliated with Delft Institute of Earth Observation and Space Systems (DEOS) at the Delft University of Technology, Netherlands. She began her career observing and modeling Jupiter's synchrotron radiation, followed by detailed investigations of the planet's thermal radio emission. In 1994 she led a world-wide campaign to observe the impact of comet D/Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter. Currently, she is exploiting adaptive optics techniques in the infrared range to obtain high angular resolution data.

Jack J. Lissauer is a Space Scientist at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California, and a Consulting Professor at Stanford University. His primary research interests are the formation of planetary systems, detection of extrasolar planets, planetary dynamics and chaos, planetary ring systems, and circumstellar/protoplanetary disks. He is co-discoverer of the first four planets found to orbit about faint M dwarf stars, and co-discovered two broad tenuous dust rings and two small inner moons orbiting the planet Uranus.

An outstanding textbook on planetary science

What's the best book to use as a text in a senior-year course on planetary science? This one gets my vote! It seems to cover everything.

After a nice introductory chapter comes the first test for this book: a 20-page chapter on dynamics with 5 pages of exercises. And this book does a great job. It explains Lagrangian points, orbital resonances, the chaotic nature of the orbit of Pluto, tides, the Yarkovski effect, and so on. And it just gets better after that, with more than 70 pages on planetary atmospheres (structure, composition, clouds, winds, photochemistry, escape). This is followed by hefty sections on planetary surfaces, planetary interiors, and planetary magnetospheres, each of which discuss the individual planets and satellites separately.

Next is a chapter on meteorites, along with radiometric dating. A chapter on asteroids: their orbits, size distribution, collisional evolution, surfaces, structures, and asteroid observing techniques. And a chapter on comets, including their origins and constraints on planetary system formation theories.

We return to dynamics for the ensuing chapter, on planetary rings: thicknesses, resonances, density waves, and shepherding. Following that is a chapter on planet formation, followed by a short concluding chapter on extrasolar planets.

The exercises are instructive and useful throughout. I learned a great deal of material from this book, even though it was nowhere near my first exposure to planetary science.

This is a superb book, if a little complex. You do need some mathematical and physics background to really follow all the topics. Well written, and having taken a class from Imke de Pater at Cal, a great representation of her work.

Waste of time

Speaking as both a science writer and lover of astronomy, I hate this book. The worst thing any text can do is turn students off its subject, a crime I consider all the worse given this thrilling and inspirational topic. I have a strong background in many of these subjects, plus a fundamental interest, yet this book makes me wonder why I am bothering. I consider it time stolen from my life rather than an investment in growth.

It's tedious, dull, and worst of all, absolutely passionless. Written mostly in passive voice, and completely full of very technical formulae, It's a tribute to everything wrong with scientific and university philosophy. There's almost zero explanation of what all these facts mean, little synthesis or global understanding. It provides no reason to care. This book is the worst kind of dry tome.

I acknowledge that it's a university text aimed at an advanced level, yet even by those standards the text is much more difficult to understand than it should be. Generally it lacks structural devices such as definitions, and topic overviews or summaries, and apparently works on the assumption that if the authors list every known fact about a topic then some kind of learning will eventually take place. This reflects an ignorance of how people actually learn. The book's existence is testament to the fact that most of its material will be new to most of its readers, yet it's completely incompetent at imparting that to someone not already familiar with it. You slog through it's long, dull sections and ask yourself: "what did I just learn from that?", and the answer will be "very little". Basically, the quintessential worst kind of university teaching distilled into book form. The professors who could write this are the same kind who would drone on to the blackboard for hours without noticing that the whole class had left.

The book also illustrates why my profession of science communication exists, because too few scientists (and professors) can make their subject interesting or clear. To express something mathematically is not the same as explaining it.

The book's award probably tells one all they need to know about the value of such awards, and the fact that science lecturers select texts on that basis rather than any real merit.

It's not totally worthless, and if you have the required extremely advanced mathematical background, and you're interested in formulae for their own sake, then you may get something from it. This is not so much a book about astronomy, as a reference about astronomical mathematics. The audience is the mathematical physicist. If you can't visualise formulae, and (like most people) need explanations in words, then this book is very nearly a waste of time.

Other books about the same subject ARE enjoyable to read and informative at the Tertiary level. By comparison I LOVE Universe, 9th ed.

Interesting angle on the Dracula story

Sometimes you pick up books on impulse and this is one of those occasions, the title piqued my interest and so did the cover. Thankfully this was one of those occasions where acting on impulse proved to be a good thing - that's not always the case!

The story concerns Dr Richard Renfield (a name that should be familiar to readers of Dracula) and provides an interesting angle of the famous story. He is a respected doctor, a visitor in lunacy (an excellent name for essentially an inspector for lunatic asylums) travelling between asylums. We start the book at the end of the story, with the famous scene after Dracula's visit to Carfax Asylum.

We are then taken back in his life to the events that led to the opening scene. I'll admit that I struggled to get into the book at first, the jump from the beginning to the story proper is jarring. However I stuck with it and I'm glad that I did, from the rocky start it develops into an interesting and well written story.

The language is well crafted and evocative from the time, the author has done his research and that shows. It is well paced (once it gets going) and has some interesting ideas along the way. There were some early encounters that I thought could be more developed and the latter half of the story is better constructed than the opening half, although it has great flavour throughout.

All in all this was fine read and if you enjoyed the Dracula story then this provides an interesting new angle to appreciate it.

This blood offers fresh blood to the Dracula story

I found I really liked this book. Renfield has always been a character I felt deserved more insight. This book really brings that insight. It examines Renfield as a person who inspected asylums before falling ill and vulnerable to Dracula’s influence. The book explores not only his declining mental health, but also his youth. It gives a new light to how Renfield thinks, what makes him tick and his motivations. While a difficult book to immerse yourself into at the, it is worth it. The book is written in the style of Dracula, so reader be warned it is in a Victorian style writing. I usually struggle with writing like that, and this book is no exception, but it is worth investing in it, it is a really good book for its exquisite depth it gives Renfield and the way it is able to blend things directly from Dracula into its folds and keep its non flashbacks within its Dracula’s timeline. Overall, it is a great book.

Discerning God's will

Seeking God's will is not something that's done once or twice in a lifetime, writes Gary Zimak in Faith Hope & Clarity. The author points out that we have an opportunity to turn to the Lord for help with major and minor decisions every day.

Zimak uses his own experience throughout the book, citing the steps he took to transition from a successful computer programmer to a full-time Catholic evangelist. He also writes about ways he and his wife reached decisions related to their children--first, a serious health issue with a newborn and later the choice to home school their daughters. His key to discovering God's will is a combination of common sense and willingness to hear and listen to what God is saying.

The book covers major elements of discernment including the role of the Church, prayer, and spiritual direction. Chapters close with a list of key points and reflection questions, making this a useful resource for faith-sharing groups as well as individuals. Sample key points:
* Trying to determine what God wants us to do is a process that takes time.
* If God wants us to know something, he will reveal it to us.
* The fact that difficulties arise in our plan doesn't mean it isn't God's will; he often allows us to struggle in order to increase our faith.
* To truly discover God's will, we must decide that what he wants is more important than what we want.
* Sometimes God's will involves doing things that we would rather avoid.
* It is never God's will that we disobey the commands of his church.

Zimak also sketches several general situations that occur during discernment and offers suggestions for dealing with them. If you feel that the Lord wants you to do something different, but don't know what that is, it may not be time to move. If you have an idea what God wants but the plan doesn't provide a way to support yourself and your family, Zimak recommends staying put for the time being.

This is a great book and I highly recommend it! I really enjoyed reading it. I love that it is easy to read and understand. Gary taught me how it is possible to have a true personal relationship with Jesus and the steps I need to take to ultimately discern His will for me. His step by step approach makes it easy for anyone to know how grow closer to God and to discern God's will for them in their life. Gary Zimak is a great author and this is one book that I will read again and again. Thank you Gary Zimak for writing this book! It is a true blessing. God Bless you!

Good but falls short of the "Clarity" promised.

Good but falls short of "Clarity" promised. Excellent writing style. Highly readable. However, when it comes to providing clarity on the most important factors used to confirm the most difficult discernments, Gary punts. He fails to address how and when "signs" can be sought or relied upon (Isaiah 7:11; Judges 6:39; Genesis 24:13, etc). In fact, he pretty much ignored that key topic relative to discernments, although it's a vital tool for those seeking "clarity" when seemingly being asked by God to take steps in life that are both radical and presumably imprudent. Likewise, Gary fails to provide clarity on the key topic of how to distinguish between an inner voice that is from the Lord, versus from oneself or the devil. Except to say that God won't ever ask you to sin, and to suggest that inner peace should accompany the Lord's voice, he doesn't give any of the other criteria commonly taught by other authors on the subject. In short, Gary was short on detailed guidance and clarity, but long on very readable anecdotes.
