Faithful to the Gospel message, he stresses the importance of a new awareness, through repentance for sins committed after the first Baptism, which he calls a Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

For Symeon, the important question posed to the baptized Christian is not whether the Holy Spirit lives within him, but is he consciously aware through a penitential conversion that must be a continued process, that he lives in Jesus Christ through the illumination of the Holy Spirit.

God is Fire and Light, and is seen and felt consciously by the true contemplative, according to Symeon, while the one who has not this mystical awareness is a cadaver, a blind man, imprisoned in darkness.

Wow, What a Life-Changing Book!

How do you review a book such as this one? When I first read this book several years ago, it changed the way I thought and lived the Christian life. Now, rereading it some years later, it reminds me of just how foundational it was in my way of thinking of "the Christian life". Especially in the way it taught me (and others through me who I teach) how important and "normal" is suffering in the true Christian life. It is through suffering God conforms us to the image of Christ.
This is a volume taken from the third volume of 'Calvin's Institutes' and has been incredibly helpful for Christians for over 400 years! One of the things you will find about this book is how extremely easy it is to understand it, as well as practical (in fact it is almost like it was written yesterday). Oftentimes, it is easy to think that a book written originally in the 16th century would be both difficult and impractical! However, this book is biblically crystal clear as well as useful! I have given this book away often and I have only seen growth in those to whom I have given it! May it be a new book for you, or one you buy again for a friend.

This thin little book is no lightweight. It's a Trojan horse that delivers timeless substance from the Scriptures on how to think about and live the Christian life. It reaches head and heart, and so is extremely practical--without being a simplistic "how-to" book. I have used it in a number of one-on-one discipling relationships; its small size makes it manageable and appealing to busy people, but God uses its substantive and convicting teaching to affect lives. Buy a copy for yourself and another for someone you care about, and get ready for sharpening discussions.

Highly recommended! Perfect first finance book.

With its folksy style, straightforward message, and easy-to-understand examples, “Eat Your Spinach” will motivate even the most reluctant to start saving and investing. In addition to the usual financial staples of budgeting, compound interest, stocks, 401Ks, etc., the book provides good warnings about how the Wall Street Machine is intent on separating you from your money rather than helping you maximize it. And the historical perspective on the markets is easy to digest without drowning the reader in numbers and charts. All in all, a great introduction to personal finance for those just starting to consider their financial future.

The career of the composer George Butterworth was cruelly cut short by a sniper's bullet at the Somme. His name is kept alive by the popularity of his orchestral tone-poems, such as The Banks of Green Willow and A Shropshire Lad, and his songs. In this book, the first full-length study of Butterworth, Michael Barlow traces his brief life: from preparatory school through Eton and Oxford, a teaching post at Radley, study at the Royal College of Music, a period as a music critic for The Times - and his enlisting in August 1914 which, two years later, led to his heroic death at the Somme. All of Butterworth's surviving compositions are discussed, and important chapters examine his Housman settings and his friendship with Vaughan Williams. Butterworth was also prominent in the folksong revival, and chronicled here for the first time are his extensive activities as a folksong and dance collector. The book also includes some of Butterworth's own writings on music.

'GREAT IN WHAT HE ACHIEVED, GREATER STILL IN WHAT HE PROMISED'.

An exceptionally well-written, thoroughly documented biography covering the complete and unfortunately short life of George Butterworth (1885-1916). All of Butterworth's surviving works are discussed along with an examination of his friendship with Vaughan Williams and the poet Housman from which he derived several of Housman's poems, the most notable of which are the setting of the six songs from The Shropshire Lad. It was this cycle that led me to find out more about Butterworth; it's incredible beauty combined with Housman's very attractive poetry makes the entire package irresistible to the singer, as well as the audience as later proved by the wide popularity of the song cycle. This, combined with the pathos created by the fact that this talented young composer just beginning his career was killed three weeks after he joined the Army by a German sniper along with several others of musical potential. WHAT A DEVISTATING LOSS TO THE MUSIC WORLD. And this "the war to end all wars"!

But the book does not dwell on this aspect, but instead gives us the succinct picture of Butterworth's background, both family and education. The author uses many footnotes, more than I used, but I did check what I considered to be important in the overall picture. I was really not much interested in his heritage, but many no doubt would be interested. It did focus on the three periods, short though they were of his composing life and I learned a great deal by this portion of the book , which also included detailed examples and explanations of his individual compositions.

The Folk Song era for Butterworth was the 2nd compostion period which I found particularly fascinating be cause it spoke of his association with many of other well-known composers interested in the Folk Music Revival; Cecil Sharp (also killed in the war), Vaughan Williams and several others. Since I knew little or nothing about this period in music in England, it made for interesting reading. Included were comments about the relationships and some were quite humorous. One that I will include herein was made by the poet Housman when he discovered that Vaughan Williams had omitted two verses from is musical setting of the song "Is My Team Ploughing?" (This is one of the Shropshire lad Songs in which a ghost is communicating with a live friend- A WONDERFUL SONG). In The V.Williams setting he leaves out the words: The goal stands up, the keeper Stands up to keep the Goal; The composer's view was that any poet who had written such lines as those should be grateful to have them left out, a remark not made directly to Housman, but to a friend; Housman's response was "I wonder how he would like me to cut out two bars of his music." Even the 'greats' can go at it!!!!!!

The book moves forward clearly and at a reasonable pace; it stays with the story and includes many photographs of Butterworth and other involved in his life. If you are a singer, especially a baritone, for that's what the songs were written for, but of course he did write instrumental music as well. The last composing period was when he focused on instrumental writing and before he was killed wrote two significant instrumental pieces, as well as many other musical compositions. He was very much a man of the English countryside, as was Housman whose verses so fired the composer's imagination. ......Butterworth was no innovatory composer, nor was his music very influential, but he will remain an important minor figure with a reputation based on a handful of works, the sincerity and musical value of which assure him a place in the history of English music."

Since the Fourth Edition of this book appeared in 1997 the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996 with its Scheme for Construction Contracts Regulations 1998 have come into force, as have the Civil Procedure Rules 1998, both of which affect the resolution of disputes arising from construction contracts. Case law has arisen from the Construction Act, and from the House of Lords' judgment in the Beaufort Developments case, overturning the much-criticised judgment of the Court of Appeal in Crouch.

Since it came into force on 31 January 1997 the Arbitration Act 1996 has generally been welcomed by users and practitioners in the construction industry. It has fulfilled expectations that it would provide a user-friendly and practical basis of resolving disputes arising from construction contracts in a fair, expeditious and economical way. In doing so it has generated a modest volume of case law that has demonstrated the excellence of the Act's provisions and its drafting.

Since the Fourth Edition of this book appeared in 1997 the Housing Grants, Construction and regeneration Act 1996 with its Scheme for Construction Contracts Regulations 1998 have come into force, as have the Civil Procedure Rules 1998, both of which affect the resolution of disputes arising from construction contracts. Case law has arisen from the Construction Act, and from the House of Lords judgment in the Beaufort Developments case, overturning the much-criticised judgment of the Court of Appeal in Crouch.

About the Author
Douglas Stephenson BSc. FICE, FIStructE, FCIArb, MConsE spent the first 25 years of his engineering career in the design and construction of a wide variety of civil engineering works. In the early 1970s he established his won practice as a consulting engineer, specializing in dispute resolution, as arbitrators and of the Society of Society of Construction Law.

I am a great John D. MacDonald fan, but I was thoroughly disappointed with this short story. I didn't check, but it must be one of his earliest works, before he learned his trade.

Juggi Bhasin was one of the first television journalists in India. He joined Doordarshan News in 1987. Awesome, contemporary thriller about Indo-Pak relations.

Could not put it down. Detailed story telling, describing the intricacies of Indo-Pak relations, on a political, and human level. Well researched. I felt like the author let us in on what goes on in secret in the halls of Parliament, that folks living normal lives don't know about.
