Well worth reading,

This is a really good little book, not too big to be off putting whilst full to the brim with motivational guidance. Short to the point chapters lead by meditative quotes at the head of each page. The author then elaborates on each of these in a down to earth and personal level and concludes each section with thought provoking questions to galvanise the reader into action. I dare even the most complacent sloth not to be inspired to full fill their dream. If you want to pull yourself out of a rut and move on with daily living in a more positive and happier frame of mind, then read this book.

This was one of several books required for a class in religion, a subject I normally shy away from. However, I came to like not only studying religion, but how this book makes the connection on different levels about current religious beliefs and practices. There are commonalities between old and new(er) religious beliefs and rituals. The book was an eye-opener.

This is a good summary of religion in traditional societies. The authors use examples around the world of various religious practices that occur in traditional societies such as festivals, rites of passages well as religious practioners. They also discuss the use of plants an animals as well as religious topics such as sickness and healing and death and the afterlife. Eventhough the book is small it does asume some knowledge about Anthropology so the text can be fairly cumbersome. In general it is a good resource for those who wish a general overview of traditional religious practices and concepts around the world.

David Morrell is best known for testosterone-fueled thrillers like Extreme Denial and First Blood (whose excellent movie version, reissued on DVD in 1999, stars Sylvester Stallone as Rambo). But Morrell has also penned many frightfully scary short stories. In Black Evening, he presents 16 of his favorites, each with a fascinating introduction explaining what provoked him to write it.

"The Dripping" (1971) came to the author in a dream that most would regard as a nightmare. In this eerie little number, a father faces his worst fear when his family goes missing. Morrell suffered his own family tragedy in January of 1987, when his son Matt was diagnosed with bone cancer. "Orange Is for Anguish, Blue for Insanity" (the Horror Writers Association's best novella of 1988) was written shortly before Matt's death. Writing about a mad painter kept Morrell sane: "The made-up horror was paradoxically providing a barrier from real-life horror." But after Matt's death, Morrell was besieged with panic attacks, and could do nothing but "stare at the ceiling" for three years. A harrowing story about lost children and a long buried family secret, "The Beautiful Uncut Hair of Graves" (another HWA award-winner) signified Morrell's return to short fiction. The title is taken from Walt Whitman's poem about death and children; John Rambo's name is a pun on Arthur Rimbaud. Morrell is a genre writer with a poet's soul.

Though best known for his high-action thrillers, Morrell has traveled many side roads in his long writing career--horror novels, westerns, even a highly personal account of his teenage son's losing battle with cancer. Now, he offers up a generally intriguing but uneven collection of 15 short stories written over a 20-year period ending in 1992. Many of the entries here are vintage Morrell, featuring dark themes, dark humor, bursts of action, a setting that's slightly askew and a main character driven by fear. "The Typewriter" tells of a writer's panic when his magic typewriter no longer turns out bestsellers. "At My Back I Always Hear" is a haunting account of a college professor (which Morrell once was) stalked by a student. The best of the stories showcase Morrell's ability to capture pure, hard-driving suspense, often culminating in unspeakable tragedy or bizarre discovery. These include "Orange Is for Anguish, Blue for Insanity" and "The Beautiful Uncut Hair of Graves." The weaker links among the entries are those with a decidedly creepy bent representative of Morrell's horror period. Among them are "The Dripping," Morrell's first published work; "Black Evening"; and "For These and All My Sins." Even the less successful stories, however, have a gripping quality--some twist or mood that drives the plot forward and locks a reader's attention. Morrell (The Brotherhood of the Rose) prefaces all the stories with personal anecdotes and other autobiographical reflections that place them in a meaningful context. In a foreword and afterword, Morrell talks about his career thus far.

Finally in one volume

There have been several times that I have bought an anthology like "Prime Evil" so that I could read an otherwise unreleased Stephen King or Clive Barker story, and ended up being blown away by the stories of David Morrell. Finally, K-Tel-like, everyone can enjoy these powerful, imaginative stories without having to buy a dozen other books.
While this collection does not contain all of Morrell's short fiction, it does contain all that I had read in other anthologies, most notably the powerhouse novella "Orance is for Anguish, Blue for Insanity," one of my all-time pieces of fiction, short or otherwise. I am a fan of author notes in collections, and Morrell doesn't disappoint. While he doesn't expound the way that, say, Harlan Ellison does, there are short notes before each store in addition to a Foreword and Afterword, and these add a texture to the book that I think makes your first read more enjoyable and increases the re-readability. Plus if you've already read a couple of these in anthologies it is nice to see the author's perspective instead of the anthology editor's perspective before the stories.
I read this during a particularly hot summer week and found it to be perfect for this setting...the stories are engrossing enough that I forgot about the heat, and a few times I caught a genuine bit of a chill! Anyone who enjoys dark stories or speculative fiction should give this great book a read.

Great stories, vintage Morrell!

I just read a few of the stories in "Black Evening" and had a lot of scary delights. David Morrell is great when it comes to suspense and thrillers and now, horror. He mixes a sense of his thrillers in with his horror stories making them much more exciting. I could even go on to compare with Stephen Kings short stories in "Skeleton Crew" Well done Mr.Morrell!

It is probably my fault, but I read this add as being a used convection oven with a used recipe guide. It was only a used recipe guide which was a very small recipe and instruction book. A very expensive recipe book. I'll be more careful when ordering again.

first of all, the description doesnt do the book much justice. it makes it sound like a stupid 'teenager kid coming out' story, but is SO much more than that. You start reading and you have nearly no possible way to know how it will end. The best non-series book Kyell has written so far.

Excellent as usual

Kyell never fails to amaze me, no matter what era or place he uses for his stories. In this one, the one I liked the most was the Moulin Rouge, and I would definitely love to discover more about this grimly thrilling universe he created. I don't think I was ever as moved by any of his other characters as by the combined (mis)fortunes of Sol and Niki, even if my mixed feelings left me a little bit confused. But of course, confusion leads to contemplation, and so I kept finding myself thinking time and time again about how this story relates to me and my own life. It was not hard to find similarities, as I've just graduated from high school, and currently about to start college, even if in a country where pederastry [sic] is a lot... let's say: less encouraged. But that's probably why I like to read these kinds of book anyways... so thank you Kyell for making this a possibility for me.
From my perspect, this book is a great read, and not just for fans of anthropomorphics, as the book puts scarce emphasis on sexual explicity, and is a lot more about life, and our struggle of finding something meaningful within it.

A captivating look at adolescent expectations

Another brilliant success! Once again Kyell Gold weaves his magic of character and emotion into possibly one of his best books to date. A captivating coming of age story that looks at perception and the expectations of youth, and how sometimes the reality that we need is different than the fantasy we desire.

If you are into Anthropomorphic fiction this book is a do not miss. If you have never read a novel with anthropomorphic this is the book to start with! The characters are all well crafted and real regardless of their physical form and if you have ever been a teenager (And really, who hasn't) you will find a connection with at least one of their plights, and understand their fight.

Loads of fun

From personal identity to time to "why not nothing?", Conee and Sider have cooked up an introduction to metaphysical questions that are a lot of fun. The chapters can be read (and re-read) in any order and thought about for a lifetime. The book is designed for a general audience - at least a general audience that likes to think philosophically. At the end of each chapter you will a helpful list of suggestions for further reading (mostly by contemporary philosophers).

Don't be fooled by other reviews! The book is neither difficult nor hard to follow. The prose is clear, engaging, and any steps in its arguments are logical, sensible, and clearly labelled (labels aren't always used and aren't rocket science, but help with recall; if you have trouble figuring out that "P2" can stand for "phase 2" then you might end up a little befuddled here and there). This book is suitable for any in high school or above, though it might be found attractive by a precocious middle-schooler. But while accessible to a wide audience, it isn't a "dumbed-down" approach to philosophy.

Excellent Introduction

"Riddles of Existence" covers central problems in general metaphysics and in special metaphysics. These include the nature of personal identity, free will, fatalism, the existence of God, material constitution, universals and modality.
The problems and their proposed solutions are explained clearly and carefully, and the style is friendly and engaging. Conee and Feldman defend their own positions, and I often disagree with them, but I do not think that they are didactic; they usually treat alternative positions sympathetically and recommend further reading for each chapter.
The book is supposed to be accessible to those without any previous exposure to metaphysics or to philosophy more generally, and I think that it is the most accessible introduction available. To be sure, beginners may find some of the discussion, for example, of the ontological argument and of universals, quite difficult and demanding.
There is also what to my mind is an original formulation and treatment of the ontological argument, and the book may be of interest to more advanced readers. It also includes a chapter on the problem of why there exists anything at all, why there is something rather than nothing, which is typically neglected in introductions.
I think that this book is a fascinating and entertaining introduction for the general interested readers, and that it should also prove quite helpful to undergraduate philosophy students.

Very good contemporary, military, romance with interesting characters (alpha males) & strong women.

3.5 stars The story was another success BUT the ending wasn't really an ending. It's a stand alone but you'll get more clarity if you've read the A Red Hot SEAL' s, Forged books. It says it's a spin off from them but to me it's the same series as most of the characters are from Forged in Fire & Forged in Ash. The main characters are Demi and Aiden. Demi' s husband died suddenly about 3 years prior to this story. Her best friend Kait is Aiden's sister so she's aware that some of Kait's family members have special 'gifts'. Aiden is a SEAL who's known Demi for years but kept his distance due to her marriage. They both know there's something special between them and are now ready to see where it goes. They each have their own issues. I was enjoying the book and didn't pay attention to my location when it suddenly ended. That's what lost the 5 star rating. The story could have gone at least a bit further to see if their relationship really formed. I didn't see anything about this story being continued after researching it a bit. I do not like serials or books that aren't stand alones but that's a personal preference. The book doesn't have a cliffhanger but it doesn't really feel complete either. I do like this author's style of writing a lot and the ending for this book is my first complaint. Hopefully some of the other stories related to this one and the Forged series will be released soon.

A lot missing in the story . . . 3-1/2 to 4 stars

The book felt incomplete, like we didn't get the whole story. It didn't last long enough to prove Aiden's theory on Demi not doing casual relationships because she gets emotionally involved. Aiden didn't apologize to Tag for fighting with him on the misunderstanding about Demi. Demi didn't tell Aiden that she really went to the bar looking for him. Nothing climatic happened in the story, unless you count her run in with the obsessive weasel in the elevator. I liked Aiden's possessiveness, although he didn't get to show a lot of it. I really like this series but I don't think it should be narrowed down to a novella, too much of the story is missing. In this book Aiden's sister Kait is referenced a lot because she's friends with Demi, but it sounds like Kait is single and I thought she met her man in the last book. (?) I will continue reading this series, but I hope the others are more complete and leaves you feeling satisfied at the end of it.

I bought this as a textbook for a class, but found it to be a fascinating compilation of world music. This version came with a CD so I was able to instantly connect the information in the book to the music itself. Anyone interested in learning more about the global influence on music would enjoy this book.
