About the Author
Iwona Blazwick is Director of the Whitechapel Gallery in London and the former Head of Exhibitions and Displays at Tate Modern. She is the author of Faces in the Crowd: Picturing Modern Life from Manet to Today, Tate Modern: A Handbook, and Cornelia Parker.

Fascinating use of materials

I don't normally buy "art" books - but when an artist friend of mine showed me her copy, I couldn't put it down...and I knew I had to get my own copy to share with my friends. The artist creates art in a fascinating way. I found her sculptures to be both amusing and mesmerizing.

More of a making-of book

[[VIDEOID:68d5df5779fa42b4c9682ad3c41007a4]]This book is more like a making-of book that talks about how the film was made. Depending on your expectation, you may or may not be disappointed with the book.

This 192-page hardcover is filled with concept art, film stills and commentary on the production process. The pages are laid out like magazine style, quite busy but beautiful.

Half of the book are filled with film stills. They are beautiful, yeah, but if you're one who likes to see production art, storyboards, character designs, then you may feel that all those film stills could have made way to include more artworks.

About the concept art. They are a mixture of sketches, digital painting, a few 3D renders and some schematics of things like Superman's statues, Batcave. The digital paintings are nice but they are often quite rough as you can notice the lack of detail when blown up to large sizes in the book. Some of the digital paintings lack the finesse while others actually look wonderful when done right. The sketches are also nice, but perhaps too sketchy. Especially for interiors, buildings, it can be quite difficult to visualise the structures.

As for character design, Superman's pretty much fixed in terms of look. Batman has the new Batsuit, mech suit and his new gadgets. Wonder Woman has 6 pages of coverage. Lex Luthor also has 6 pages. Doomsday has 2 pages. There aren't a lot of costume or character designs to speak of. Most of the characters you'll see them in the form of film stills. Batman's the one with more designs to feature.

It's a mixed bag for me with regards to the art. But I'm saying that because I know and have seen better superhero film artbooks out there. If you have the artbook for The Man of Steel, you should expect art in a similar style.

So the highlight of this book is actually the beautiful film stills of scenes and characters. The other highlight is the insightful commentary talking about the production process. The downside is the art? I'm not too sure but I felt that the artworks could look better. Or maybe it's just not the style of art I was expecting. Oh well, art is subjective.

Overall, I still think it makes for a nice companion to the film. As a making-of book, it's quite good but as an artbook it can be better.

Batman v Superman: The Art of the Film

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice pits two iconic heroes against one another. That premise, when combined with the visual talents of director Zack Snyder, promises to be a great looking film with lots of interesting design elements. This book features concept art from the film and highlights the overall look of the film along with key design choices related to the characters.

As an effective sequel to Man of Steel, Dawn of Justice maintains the design sensibilities of Snyder's previous Superman film. The film very much wants to look and feel like the real world, with sites like the US Capitol making an appearance. The fictional city of Metropolis looks much like our own modern-day urban population centers - with Lexcorp HQ Tower looming large in the skyline.

The wold of Batman, on the other hand, is a bit more stylized. Gotham is as dark and dismal as it's ever been. Because this is Batman's first appearance in this story (The Dark Knight trilogy is not considered part of this "universe"), the designers were able to start from scratch and do something different. Snyder and his team succeeding in creating a Batman that is differentiated from all the others that have come before. The book also features Batman's many gadgets and weapons, his mech suit, as well as the Batmobile and Batwing.

The book also takes a brief look at the other characters in the film - Lex Luthor, Doomsday, and of course Wonder Woman. The challenge across the board was to take inspiration from the comics, but make the designs unique and interesting for the big screen. A few key scene in the film are also detailed, including the fight between Batman & Superman, and also the Knightmare sequence.

The imagery in the book is outstanding. It's mostly sketches and conceptual artwork. But there are also some production photos and some stills from the completed movie. If you are interested in this film and enjoy Snyder's visual style, then you'll probably enjoy this book.

If you are a fan of movies, like me, you will love this book. Full of great pictures, concept art, and behind the scene insight on the ideas, characters and props used during the film. A lot attention went into the making of the book and it shows. If you have a film fan, a DC fan, or a superhero fan in the family, this will make a great gift. I'm very happy with the purchase.

About the Author
Erle Stanley Gardner (1889-1970) is a prolific American author best known for his works centered on the lawyer-detective Perry Mason. At the time of his death in March of 1970, in Ventura, California, Gardner was "the most widely read of all American writers" and "the most widely translated author in the world," according to social historian Russell Nye. The first Perry Mason novel, The Case of The Velvet Claws, published in 1933, had sold twenty-eight million copies in its first fifteen years. There have been six motion pictures based on his work and the hugely popular Perry Mason television series starring Raymond Burr, which aired for nine years and 271 episodes.

Shoplifting Old Lady

Very well-plotted mystery entangled with two murders and two guns. Events occured one after another from the beginning to the end and I never got bored. Mrs. Breel, the shoplifting old lady, was the most peculiar of all Mason's clients; her attitude was as cold as a cucumber but what she really did were highly irrational. I wouldn't say I liked her, but anyway she was very impressive.

A Masterful Mason Mystery

Erle Stanley Garnder's THE SHOPLIFTER'S SHOE is vintage Perry Mason, published in the 30s when Gardner was at the height of his powers. This is a complex tale of sinister gem thieves, blood-stained shoes, phantom bullets, and a double murder. Of course, the most obviously innocent person is immediately determined by the police to be guilty and that propels Perry into action. Perry is more hard-boiled in this story than he is in the 50s and 60s. I don't think audiences were intended to LIKE him as much as we are meant to later in the series. His treatment of Paul Drake (his detective friend who gives constant assistance), for example, is a little more gruff in this tale. And Perry has no time to give to the hysterical Virginia Trant, when a second body almost literally falls in her lap. Gardner, at this stage in his writing, seems to be influenced by his BLACK MASK days, when he was writing his Lester Leith and Phantom Crook tales. But watching Perry in action, whether hard-boiled or not, is always fun.
So the question remains: is THE SHOPLIFTER'S SHOE a good book? Yes, but with some reservations. The mystery itself is very good, with a dazzling defense of the defendant. The entire case hinges on which pocket a policemen uses to store the incriminating evidence. This won't ruin anything because we are not actually shown this event when it occurs in the story. Once again, Perry shows the unreliability of circumstantial evidence, which is a Gardner trademark. However, I don't think the characters were as fully developed as in some of the other books. There is really no one to latch on to emotionally. Also, Della Street takes a back seat in this story, which doesn't help either. In fact, Della doesn't really make her mark until the very last page. But I will say that it is worth the wait...To conclude, the plot is very strong in this book, with interesting clues and a strong trial sequence. Though not one of Gardner's main masterpieces, it is still well worth the three hours it would take to read.

One of his better books

I have been reading a lot of fiction lately. I had just finished the first of Richard Phillips Rho series of books and I thought I would read this just as a break. Well, by the second chapter I had discovered the difference between good writing-the Phillips book and great writing. Gardner smoothly moves his characters around and never wastes words. The story is typical Perry Mason-but then that's what i came for.

If you want to read a great example of A Perry Mason Novel, this is one for you.
