About the Author

Allen R. Angel received his AAS in Electrical Technology from New York City Community College. He then received his BS in Physics and his MS in Mathematics from SUNY at New Paltz, and he took additional graduate work at Rutgers University. He is Professor Emeritus at Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York where he served for many years as the chair of the Mathematics Department. He also served as the Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation Summer Institutes at Rutgers University from 1967—73. He served as the President of the New York State Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (NYSMATYC) and the Northeast Vice President of the American Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC). He is the recipient of many awards including a number of NISOD Excellence in Teaching Awards, NYSMATYC's Outstanding Contributions to Mathematics Education Award, and AMATYC's President Award. Allen enjoy tennis, worldwide travel, and visiting with his children and granddaughter.

Dennis Runde received his BS and MS in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin–Platteville and Milwaukee, respectively. He has a PhD in Mathematics Education from the University of South Florida. He has been teaching for twenty years at State College of Florida, Manatee, and Sarasota Counties and for ten years at Saint Stephen's Episcopal School. Besides coaching little league baseball, his other interests include history, politics, fishing, canoeing, and cooking. He and his wife Kristin stay busy keeping up with their three sons—Alex, Nick, and Max.

I got an A...

I purchased this book because it was the assigned text for my Elementary Algebra college course.

It had been nearly 30 years (!) since my last math class and I have always been very weak in math but I actually found that, overall, the book explained the procedures for performing the different mathematical and algebraic actions reasonably well, although the book is not intended to be the be-all and end-all of the instruction. You do still have to go to the lectures, pay attention, and take a lot of notes! ;) For that reason, I do think this book might be a poor choice for students trying to learn on their own, either as a referesher, in preparation for CLEP type testing, or in a homeschooling situation (unless a competent instructor is available). Still, I think it is valuable to go through the body of the chapter soon after the lecture and work the problems in the discussion sections before tackling the homework problems, because it will reinforce what was taught in the lecture.

I do feel I must warn people that the later chapters' explanations are often rather abbreviated because they do expect that you will have thoroughly absorbed the contents of earlier chapters and so do not explain many steps that were covered earlier in the book. If you find yourself beginning to get a little bit bogged down, don't wait, get help IMMEDIATELY because you will get yourself in quicksand really fast if you don't have the basics down solid and the book won't be as much help as you need then. Trust me on this one - luckily I had done well enough on my earlier tests and quizzes and kept up with all my homework so I could afford to basically tank the final and still squeak into my A, because I completely crashed and burned in chapter 8!

Although it's a heavy book to lug around, I appreciated the large visual format, uncrowded page layouts and clear typeface. Not much highlighting needed in this book due the color coding (although I did use quite a few Post-It flags and sticky notes to mark certain important things and add my own notations) so if this is a gen-ed for you it may be a good choice to rent this one and save the money to buy the books in your major subject that you'll be most likely to use as reference down the line.

Overpriced waste of trees

Overpriced waste of trees. A hodgepodge of problems coupled with instructions on how to solve 25% of them. Totally worthless without the 'mymathlab' access code ($99 extra if not buying this book new).

This book did teach me one thing, though: the order of operations. 1. Read chapter in this book 2. Get problem from this book 3. Google/go to khan academy for a coherent lesson.

For as expensive as it is, you would think that it would be more than just a problems workbook. But then, poor students are the ones getting stuck with the cost, so who cares.

Best Math Text That I Have Ever Used!

This book has step-by-step instructions that teaches students exactly what they need to know in an easy-to-follow format. I have never had a math textbook that was this well written. You definitely will be able to complete the practice problems without any major problems by following the examples.

Note: I wasn't required to purchase the online component, so I can't comment on it. I can't see a reason why you would need it.

A firecracker of a start to a new and very promising series!

This first book is just as you would expect to be by this amazing author! Written well and to a high standard. The story is excellent and has you hooked from the get go! We meet Donnie the young son of one of the main heads of "The Family" Even at his age he has the reputation of someone who is double his age. He is a formidable opponent to anyone and has been groomed by his father since birth to take his rightful place amongst the family when the time is right. Then we have Paige, a shy quiet girl, who keeps to herself and just tries to get through each day as her and her mother try to survive when her father is gone. When these two ... Donnie and Paige's worlds collide it shows that people are always more than you expect and can surprise you at every turn. Never underestimate a person on an assumption just because of what they look like or who their family is. As this story goes on we see things amongst the family change, opinions and loyalties, hopes and dreams but through out it all Donnie and Paige find an unexpected bond that forms when they least expect it and shows if you trust the one that you love you will never be sorry. As I say this is the first book in this exciting new mafia series and I cannot wait for the next one! So many possibilities and plot twists could make this series one of the best of the year. I really hope that you enjoy this read as much as I did. Even though the step brother theme has become immensely popular right now this story is still worth a read I did not want it to end! And again as I previously said even though this is a taboo tale of sorts as in some peoples opinions and it is not the done thing, there is nothing wrong in this story at all and no intimacy between blooded relations at any point, it is not a story of incest or anything of the kind.I thoroughly enjoyed it and wholeheartedly recommend it! Happy reading!

a taboo kinda love

AS they now have a lot of books out there in this genre. I have found only a few that has intrigued me and that I actually liked, this is one of them. I've always enjoyed Sam's books and this is just another one that will go on my fav shelf.

So many of us find the "taboo" so tempting even if its in our minds or behind close doors. For Paige she will get up close and personal when her mom and her struggle to make a living after her father goes MIA. Paige has one more year to hang on and then she can be on her own at college. When her mom drops a bomb on her that will change her life.

Donnie is the son of the Family's leader and only has a few months of school left. For Donnie though he is already an adult, he has done "adult" things...working for his father since he was very young. When his father brought in his new woman, Donnie met his new step sister. So innocent she looks and his father thinks she has a secret.

The Family - once in there's only one way out. Anthony runs the family with a iron hand the old school way. The Old School way... is there any other way?

The story and the characters all meshed together with a bit of danger, suspense stirred in some passion and Sam's done it again. Enjoy

Paige knows how to keep her head down and mouth shut. After her father disappeared with a cryptic message only for her ears, Paige continues to bide time before she can leave for college. She loves her mother but doesn't always agree with her choices. When she finds out her mother is about to marry into the Martinez family, Paige knows exactly who they are. They are part of "The Family", dangerous and she wants no part of it.

Donnie Martinez has been ordered to get close to his new stepsister Paige and find out what she knows. Her father worked for the family, even if she did not realize it. Donnie is having a hard time breaking through though as Paige is not like any other woman he has met. As he continues to try to be her friend, Donnie finds himself liking Paige quite a bit and the feeling is mutual. In order to save her though he will have to marry her.

Excellent read. This was gritty, suspenseful, and powerful. I was completely engaged from beginning to end. I felt for Paige, she has no out her mothers actions are putting her in danger. Donnie goes from being arrogant to protective where Paige is concerned. Loved this.

From the Inside Flap
The lunch crowd was already dwindling by the time she got to the Bobcat Creek Cafe, but there was still a hum of friendly chatter as she pushed through the door. Her little sister Brandi looked up from the couple she was waiting on waved her towards an empty booth in her section with a happy little smile. Kelsey took two steps towards the booth and stopped cold.

Jack Thompson sat in a corner booth with the remains of an enchilada lunch special before him. Across the table from him Carol June Hinks tossed her blonde curls and laughed at something he said, eyes sparkling as she hung on every word out of his mouth. After a moment she reached out and lightly touched the back of Jack's hand with her fingertips, and his lips twitched into that lopsided smile that made Kelsey's heart lurch.

Not Carol June. No. Oh, no.

Before she knew what she was doing Kelsey had spun and slammed through the cafe door, headed for her car. Hurt and anger made her fumble her key a couple of times before she could get it into the ignition, but then the engine came alive and she peeled out of the parking lot and sped out of town and onto the lonely highway twisting up into the hills. Bitter tears blurred her eyes and she kicked herself for letting herself feel anything for a man who had obviously only been interested in one thing and had moved on already. It was silly, she knew. Their only connection was through sin, and no good could come of that. But he had made her feel so incredible that somehow in the back of her mind she couldn't help but think there had been something there between them, that he at least wanted her enough to come back for more instead of chasing after that little slut Carol June.

That was the real blow to her pride. She could handle being dumped, but being dumped for Carol June?

It took ten minutes for Jack to catch up to her. Once again flashing red and blue lights lit up her rear view mirror as he raced up the narrow highway behind her. For a second she considered ignoring him just to see what he would do, but then with a word that would have made her daddy gasp she pulled over onto the shoulder. The car had barely stopped moving when she yanked the door open and stormed out.

Jack's car slid in behind hers and he jumped out to meet her.

"What the hell is wrong with you, Kelsey?"

"What the hell are you doing having lunch with that little tramp Carol June?" she demanded in reply.

He took a step backwards, thrown off by her anger. "What do you care who I have lunch with?"

Her eyes flashed, and then she shook her head and looked away so he couldn't see the tears. "Men," she spat, and turned on her heel to go back to her car. "Leave me alone, Jack. Just leave me alone. Go back to Carol June."

A big hand closed on her elbow and spun her around. The deputy looked down at her with a perplexed frown. "I thought you wanted me to leave you alone. You've been avoiding me every time you saw me. Church, the ball games. You wouldn't even look at me."

"Well, what do you expect?" she shot back. "It's not exactly like you were courting me or something. What would my daddy and sisters think if they saw us? What could I say? 'No, Daddy, we're not dating. We just fuck on the side of the road now and then.'"

Jack's eyes twinkled and his lips twitched as his arms went around her and pulled her against him. "Don't forget about at my house."

She pushed against him, but she couldn't budge those arms. "Let me go!"

Lips nuzzled against her ear. "Is that really what you want, Kelsey? You want me to let you go?"

Plants in the Service of Empire

This book offers an invaluable analysis of the ways in which plants and knowledge about them have been employed towards the expansion of the British empire. Amateur and later professional botanists associated with the Kew Botanical Gardens made relocating plants from one continent to the next possible through innovation and enhanced understanding of the plants' systems, taxonomy and ecology. This knowledge and related inventions for transporting plants made it possible for the British to grow rubber in SE Asia, tea in Ceylon, coffee in Latin America, sugar in Brazil, etc. This movement of plants around the world were further aided by the valuable discovery of quinine for curing fevers and malaria which meant that the cinchona tree from Peru and Bolivia facilitated the penetration of colonial empire further into the African and Asian continents. This book is carefully researched and beautifully narrated.

An excellent, eye-opening history

I stumbled across this book while doing research for a master's thesis that dealt with, of all things, the history of paleontology and the Peking man digs in China. I found it eye-opening and fascinating. Through showing the history of the British Royal Botanical Gardens, the author manages to teach a great deal about the rise of Europe and the West, Colonialism, science, agriculture and economic production throughout the British empire, and the world at large, up to modern times. Of special interest to me was the intertwining of science and economic exploitation in colonialized nations of the time. I consider this book remarkable in that it taught me more than if I had read five similar books.
