This volume demonstrates how the dispensational method of Bible study is the method God approves, and the only one by which the Bible makes sense. It shows the perfect harmony between the changeless principles of God and His changing dispensations. This book points out the distinctions between Prophecy and the Mystery, the kingdom of heaven and the Body of Christ, the ministries of Peter and Paul, etc.

A Dispensationalists Handbook
By Kevin Ball
I have read almost all of Stam's books and Things that Differ is his most important work as far as I'm concerned. No theological system is 100% correct and no one has all the answers but if you have lots of questions that never seem to get answered to your satisfaction I believe this book will leave you with the least amount unanswered. It's an easy read, it's full of verse references and it will answer your questions about subjects I hear people ask every day on the radio like, baptism, tithing, sign gifts, salvation and works/security etc... Give it a shot. It doesn't cost much and even if you wind up thinking Stam is crazy it will make you think and study to prove your own views are correct.

Best Book On Pauline Dispensationalism
By John Grove
This book has been instrumental for years in opening the eyes of believers around the globe to the basic tenets of Mid-Acts dispensationalism and stands as the monumental book on "rightly dividing the word of truth" (II Tim 2:15).

I would also recommend other works by Stam:

1. Acts Dispensationally Considered.

2. The Controversy (now called "Holding Fast the Faithful Word")

3. Paul, His Apostleship and Message

4. Moses and Paul

His collection can be found through the Berean Bible Society

[...]

Caution: These books change lives.

You will finally understand the bible!!!
By Edward Cook
I read this book 25 years ago and have continued to recommend it to those who have been trying to understand the bible. The bible will not be a mystery anymore. It will help anyone understand why some christian speak in tongues, get water baptized, believe they can loose their salvation, believe they are going through the tribulation, etc. and others don't. Can this book do all that? Absolutely!!!!!!!!

“Books by former members of so-called ‘destructive cults’ . . . tend to focus on resentments, oppressions, and family dysfunctions. The reader gets no sense of why anyone would want to follow such a leader. Erin Prophet’s account is different. As reported in a Los Angeles Times obituary, Elizabeth Clare Prophet died on October 15, 2009.

From the Inside Flap
In early 1990, in response to the apocalyptic prophecies of her mother, Elizabeth Clare Prophet, Erin Prophet entered a network of underground bunkers in Montana along with members of her mother's Church Universal and Triumphant, a controversial New Age sect much of America had branded a “cult.” Emerging to find the world intact, Erin was forced into a radical reassessment of everything she knew, or thought she knew, about love, life, and obligations to church and family. She had spent her adolescence watching her mother vilified as a dangerous cult leader even while attempting to meet her mother's expectations by becoming a “prophet” herself.
In Prophet's Daughter, the onetime heir apparent of the woman known to tens of thousands of followers as “Guru Ma” provides a fiercely honest account of her struggle to understand a mother who was both loved and hated. Even to her family, Elizabeth Clare Prophet projected an aura of infallibility and held her closest followers to a rigid moral code. With the craft of a storyteller, Erin shows how she first dismissed, then entertained, rumors of her mother's sexual hypocrisy, and suggests that the strain of maintaining a façade of perfection fueled her mother's departure from reality.
The taut narrative hangs on an intense combination of health crises and external pressures that drove Guru Ma's increasingly dire prophecies. Throughout the book, Erin also candidly recounts her own journey, the dwindling of her belief, and the turmoil of witnessing her beloved mother's decline. In a moving conclusion, she describes her efforts to combat the subtle corruption brought on by Guru Ma's power and increasing isolation, only to be thwarted by the onset of her mother's Alzheimer's disease.
A remarkable memoir, Prophet's Daughter affords a rare look inside the workings of a secretive sect that once held a nation's attention and still exists today. And it makes a powerful contribution to ongoing public debates about power, group behavior, and the future of religion.

Honest, Informative and Well Written
By H. Lynn
This book deals with matters of belief and as such it tends to evoke strong emotions. Read the rest of the book reviews if you want to know what I mean. By and large they are 1 star or 5 stars depending upon whether or not the reviewer believes in the ascended masters. Since the opinions of the book are so subjective, I think it's only fair to offer some information about myself.

I was born and raised in the Church Universal and Triumphant. I was named by Elizabeth Prophet. I attended Montessori International. My family was on permanent staff during the shelter cycle and I was a child at that time. I was in the the large shelter complex in the Heart during the 'drills' in the spring of 1990.

This book is goldmine of first-hand information about the Church Universal and Triumphant and the shelter cycle. For anyone looking to answer the questions 'what actually happened?' and 'how did it come about?' this book is a great place to start.

For those of us that were present during the shelter cycle, it confirms many things that we suspected but were unable to prove. For instance, it was rumored around the cafeteria that we had acquired an armored personnel carrier. Erin confirms the presence of not one, but two APC's on church property. We believed that the church members responsible for security had acquired a stockpile of assault rifles. Erin confirms the existence of a hidden cache of AR-15's. As far as the scandal of Vernon Hamilton, Edward Francis and the weapons purchase: everyone on staff knew that permanent staff members were essentially paupers and that there was no way Vernon Hamilton was walking around with $150,000 of his own money. We believed (without proof) that the upper echelons of the church hierarchy knew of the weapons purchase, approved it and backed it monetarily. Erin confirms all of this. (I might add that no-one on staff that I talked to at that time disapproved of stockpiling weapons; we thought it was a prudent precaution for the post-apocalyptic fantasies that we indulged. Vernon and Edward had our full moral support.)

(** Amended at the request of the author based on additional information and clarification that she supplied about the purchase of the APC's.)

As a member of permanent staff and a participant in many of the events in this book, I though I knew the whole story of the shelter cycle. I was mistaken. Secrets were kept and information was withheld even from the 'inner circle' of the permanent staff. For instance, none of us had any idea that Elizabeth had been diagnosed with epilepsy, or that she had suffered a tonic-clonic seizure during the shelter cycle. None of us understood the role that Erin played as seer to Elizabeth during that critical time. And, as I mentioned earlier, none of us were privy to knowledge that the leadership had of the weapons purchases. In expectation of the apocalypse, and in the grip of paranoia, the church had become very compartmentalized. At each level of the hierarchy, knowledge was jealously sealed away from the level below. It is a testament to the effectiveness of this compartmentalized structure that the leadership was able to keep such secrets in a communal environment where we all lived, worked, ate, sang and decreed together.

But there is a lot more to this book than a simple list of dates and events. Erin offers analysis and insight into the dynamics of the organization of the church and the forces that impelled us to those actions that seemed ludicrous and dangerous from an outside perspective. One of the most important aspects of the Church that Erin examines up is the dichotomy between the outer Teachings versus the inner Teachings. Briefly, the outer teachings focused on self reliance through a personal connection to God via the Holy Christ Self. In contrast, the inner teachings focused on personal surrender as implied by the guru / chela relationship. The self-dissolving love of the guru grew to such a degree that we revered her as a living deity who had balanced 100% of her karma and who was infallible. The abuses of the shelter cycle that horrified the members of the outer circle of the church become more understandable when viewed in the light of the inner teachings through which we had fallen into the idolatry of worshiping a living human being.

There is a lot more. Erin spends a lot of time discussing the group mechanics of the staff, and the symbiotic relationship between the Prophet and the chelas who hungered for her prophecy. I find that I do not have space to rehash these subjects here; for those who want more, I must simply recommend that they acquire the book and begin to read.

I do have a few nits to pick with the book. In some places, I think that Erin does not fully own up to the consequences of her actions and the impact that they had on other people's lives. For instance, Erin's divine revelation of the need to stockpile supplies for seven years dramatically effected the lives of every staff member down to the smallest. Children were pulled out of school at Montessori International and forced to work (without pay) in a food processing plant to meet the expanded supply needs by the divine deadline. But I digress; no book can tell the story from everyone's point of view. This is a memoir, after all, and it's perfectly legitimate for Erin to tell her story rather than attempt to tell the story of every staff member.

I would have read this book one way or another simply for the informational content within it. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the text; Erin is a much better writer than I had expected. I read not only with interest, but with pleasure. She strikes a fine balance between presenting the facts and evoking a setting. The places times and attitudes are recalled with such vivid clarity that one can begin to understand the psychology of the major players in the story. I'm sure that some of the sections were quite painful to write. I was shocked at Erin's candor in discussing the details of the Prophet's private family lives. Her recollections of psychological coercion and sexual manipulation shed light on the inner workings of the mind of a leader already in the grips of illness, prophecy and paranoia.

I'd like to express my gratitude to Erin for writing this book. It is an illuminating read, even for those of us who had a front seat ticket to the drama of the times. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in new age religions. I think that anyone who was a member of the Church Universal and Triumphant during the shelter cycle will find it to be enlightening. I would especially recommend it to anyone who is currently in or considering joining an organization based on the teachings of the ascended masters.

The Message Versus the Messenger - Passive Versus Active
By Peter Richard
I had the fortunate opportunity to read the majority of the teachings BEFORE I read this book. This is a well written book that does not distract from the teachings whatsoever. Erin writes this book with no agenda, unlike her brother Sean, and simply presents facts as they were observed by Erin at the time that they happened. Many people have a difficult time separating the Message from the Messenger. If the Messenger makes an error in their personal life, many people are willing to throw out the entire Message or teaching because the Messenger does not portray the Godly aspect of perfection. If this was the case, we should throw out all teachings from Moses who slew a man with whom he disagreed with in ancient Egypt. We should also toss out all of the Psalms since David not only slept with another man's wife, but even made sure that the man was killed in battle so that David could take that man's wife to be his own.

Here are some very important facts gleaned from this book that can be of positive reinforcement for those on the path:

1. Erin very accurately accesses that the error that Elizabeth made was when she began to try to be a PROPHET rather than the MESSENGER. This is even described by Elizabeth herself when discussing this issue with Erin. Elizabeth stated that she needed a "seer" (whom she entrusted in the gifts of Erin) because she was unable to "see" herself. Elizabeth states that the role of Messengership is "Passive", whereas the role of "Prophet" is "Active". This means that Elizabeth passively received the messages from the ascended masters, but played no active part in their interpretation or receivership. She was simply the conduit for the messages. That is a good sign. She relayed the messages as they were received.

2. Elizabeth appeared to want to take a more "active" role post 1986. This led to the eventual downfall of the reliability and the format of the teachings formerly coming through Elizabeth prior to assuming this role. Much of the information that Elizabeth provided from the "prophet" or "active" standpoint came from Erin herself who had been assigned that role by Elizabeth. There was never any confirmation from the ascended masters that this "prophet" role taken on by Elizabeth was endorsed by them, or that the information being received was valid and to be acted upon.

3. Erin describes the process of receiving the "prophetic" messages very clearly, and they are completely opposite of the processes that Elizabeth normally used to receive the ascended master messages. Elizabeth would bring Erin to the altar, and then would begin a process of in her own words "clearing the altar" so that Erin could begin to receive the "prophetic" messages that Elizabeth herself could not and did not receive. This was clearly an active role that Elizabeth through the instrument of Erin assumed. There is no indication from the book that Elizabeth ever asked the ascended masters whether this was an acceptable process or not. Since Elizabeth was not the intended receipient of these "prophesies", she perhaps unwittingly assumed that the information received by Erin was from the ascended masters, and then proceeded to add her own insights to the messages.

4. From the book, it appears that Elizabeth became quite enamored with this "clearing of the altar" and receiving "prophetic" messages thru Erin over time. Elizabeth stated to Erin that she liked the process because specific questions of an "outer" nature could be asked, and a direct answer would be received, unlike the information contained in the messages that Elizabeth received while taking a dictation. Post 1986, it appears that Elizabeth felt that her role should change from that of Messenger to Prophet. From that point on, we began to see more of Elizabeth the "prophet" and less of Elizabeth the Messenger. In fact El Morya himself was "benched" from giving any more dictations during this time according to Elizabeth.

5. Post 1986, Elizabeth began to author more books based on her own insight, and less from the compilation of ascended master dictations. The Astrology of the Four Horsemen is one such book. This book is clearly the interpretation of Elizabeth herself, not the ascended masters. The viewpoints of the book fed into popular histerias of that period of time, and directly tried to tie the visions contained in the Book of Revelations to very specific events that were happening at that time in the world. Prior ascended master dictations stated that the Book of Revelations was an allegory of non specific terms that every soul must pass thru on their way to the ascension. This ascended master information was completely thrown out the window. The Apocalypse of the Four Horsemen was a severe departure from the original teachings passed thru the Messenger by the ascended masters in the past. The information in the book authored by Elizabeth was even "changed" or "added to" as world events began to unfold. There was never and is never any need to change any information contained in a dictation from an ascended master. All information is relevant and truthful, and needs no reinterpretation or correction.

6. There is a distinct difference from the messages given in the dictations from the ascended masters and those messages given by Elizabeth Clare Prophet hereself. I have always noticed this when reading the Pearls of Wisdom. Ascended master dictations are always consistent and full of Godly Wisdom, whereas material direct from Elizabeth seems to be more of a commentary rather than direct inspiration. This became more pronounced post 1986 as books were written from the viewpoint of Elizabeth herself rather than from materials gleaned from the Ascended Masters.

7. Accrording to prior Ascended Master material, nobody can predict the future with any certainty due to man's gift of free will. No outcome is certain. There are only projected possibilities that may occur based on the future choices made by man. This is the message contained in the story of Ninevah from the Bible. The prophet prophesized that Ninevah would be destroyed because the city had rejected God and was involved in great wicked acts. Ninevah repented, so the words of the prophet were made null and void, and the city was saved from the prophesized destruction. Man's free will changed the course of that particular history. This has always been the teaching of the ascended masters, so they would have in no way endorsed the process of "clearing the altar" so that specific questions could be answered in an absolute manner.

8. According to the book, it appears that Elizabeth also began to rely more on the specific answers that were being received from the source thru Erin at the "cleared altar" than on her own I AM presence or those of others. This was a severe departure from the teachings as well. Even Erin asked her mother why they were micro-managing every aspect of the bomb shelter building process when there were perfectly intelligent human beings who were more than capable of making the right decisions. Elizabeth insisted that they must ask for direction on these matters or egos would prevail. The teachings clearly state that each person has their own "I AM" presence which is more than capable of making right decisions. Taking away the individual "I AM" power and making it subservient to the information being received from the "cleared altar" was a serious departure from the teachings, and also became a very large and expensive mistake that had repercussions far into the future.

9. It is interesting to note that once Elizabeth Clare Prophet decided to change from a Messenger to a prophet, everything began to go downhill. Dictations from that period on began to become quite scarce and unreliable since they were interjected upon by Elizabeth. Sean Prophet notes that drinking of non-alcoholic beer was banned by Elizabeth who stated that she had received the information from a dictation which appeared to be self-serving to the wishes of Elizabeth and the older women of her following. I have never seen this dictation in print, and suspect it will not be seen. I have always wondered why my Pearls of Wisdom library is rather blank post 1988. Elizabeth's health also began a very serious and rapid decline that eclipsed any further information from coming out of her. The change form Messenger to prophet also caused a deteriorization among the followers themselves as they began to rely more and more on Elizabeth, and less and less on their own I AM presence. Elizabeth became more and more of an idol that was worshipped by her followers, and the Church members began to take less personal responsibility for their own advancement along the path. Elizabeth became more enslaved by her followers as their reliance upon her every word and movement meant that they would do nothing unless directed by the Messenger, even though this was contrary to the very teachings that they had received.

10. Erin in no way ever describes her mother as a fraud, or implies that any of the dictataions were made up or designed by her mother. Elizabeth never reveals that there was anything deceptive about the messages that she received, and never tells Erin that the messages were being manufactured in order to control her followers. Elizabeth only describes the process of receiving the messages as "passive", meaning that she in no way controlled or modified the Messages themselves.

In conclusion, this book is a good read to those who are establised in the teachings and want to know just exactly what happened to the forward movement of this outer organization of the Great White Brotherhood. This book will not detract from the teachings in any way, but will be a lesson as to what happens when we decide to go beyond the role that God has planned for us. One can be rest assured that the dications received from Elizabeth Clare Prophet and recorded in the Pearls of Wisdom are accurate and benefical in every way. If one is planning on turning Elizabeth Clare Prophet into an idol, and expects her personal life to reflect the fullness of God, then they will be very disappointed. We should always be grateful that Elizabeth Clare Prophet fulfilled her role as Messenger very well, and that we have all been blessed with the "Pearls of Wisdom" which are the accurate teachings of the Ascended Masters. We cannot ask for anything more than these very special gifts from heaven that came through the instrument of Elizabeth Clare Prophet while she faithfully performed her role as Messenger. We must always appreciate Elizabeth Clare Prophet's faithfulness in recording and making available the very precious Pearls of Wisdom that represent the very truth and life of the New Covenant. May we learn as well, that we should be content in the role that God has assigned for each one of us, and that we should not overstep the responsibilities assigned to us as we travel along our Spiritual path towards the ascension.

A Gripping Cautionary Tale
By Sean Prophet
This outstanding document accomplished two extremely difficult tasks: Providing a history and human context for our mother's life, and demonstrating Erin's difficulty coming of age while faced with the expectations of following in her mother's footsteps. The story is told against a backdrop of constant crisis, "divine revelation," fame and the idolatry of followers.

It is to Erin's credit that she did a decade of research, and consulted a wide range of sources both within our family and outside of it. Her book is factually unimpeachable when it comes to its representation of the lives of our parents and the church they founded. Erin went way beyond due-diligence as an author in having her manuscript vetted and triple-checked by every member of our family.

As someone who was right by Erin's side through most of the events that make up her narrative, I can say that she made every attempt at laser-accuracy. In my view, she has also been gracious and erred on the side of protecting her parents and the feelings of church members at almost every level. As I read through the book, I was often astounded by her dispassionate and unbiased tone even when describing very painful situations. There were many less charitable ways she could have presented the information, and some earlier drafts reflected that.

I speak here specifically to those in CUT who may be disturbed by her revelations, which some have called "salacious." I ask: What better way is there to evaluate a person's ethics than how they lived? I would argue that like running for public office, the very act of raising oneself up as a "guru" invites and even demands just such scrutiny. For it is in the nuance of personal life decisions that character is revealed.

I applaud Erin's discussion of mom's meddling in her marriage. For Erin's marriage was by no means the only one to suffer. I saw countless people humiliated and broken up. Whenever mom used to chastise married staff members, she insisted that their spouse be present--often demanding the spouse take her side and reinforce her position. People were told on a whim that their husband or wife was a "fallen one" or "betrayer"--if that person became inconvenient to mom's agenda. Friendships, relationships and marriages were all expendable. This kind of spiritual hubris only survived as long as it did through the shame of followers to acknowledge it--a code of silence to protect the "sanctity" of the messengership on which they based their lives. I agree with Erin that it must be exposed if it is not to be repeated.

This is reinforced by the example of my own experience. I made the decision in 1985 at the age of 21 to marry Kathleen Mattson, who was then pregnant with my eldest son. Mom was violently opposed to it. She summoned me to her house in Malibu and arranged to have my best friend (a staff member) present at an all-night session where she spiritually threatened and browbeat me and convinced me to send Kathleen away to a CUT center in Vancouver. This separation lasted about 2 months until I realized that my wife-and-son-to-be were far more important to me than mom's blessing or spiritual pronouncements. I sent Kathleen a plane ticket, and brought her back. When I told my mom of my decision, she first threatened to excommunicate us from the church and to cut off all contact. Rather than admit she might have overreached, she preferred to compound the error by instructing followers that I and her future daughter-in-law be outcast and shunned like pariahs. Eventually she saw that I wasn't backing down, and she agreed to marry us in a group ceremony with 9 other couples, and accepted us back into the fold. Contrary to the disaster she had predicted, our marriage lasted 10 years and produced 3 (now adult) sons whom she loved dearly. As this episode demonstrates, more people should have stood up to her over the years.

But many people did not, and allowed their lives to be knocked off track. Of course the biggest example of the folly of her spiritual authority was the decision to squander the lifetime endowment of her church in a massively paranoid exercise in survival preparation.

As Erin documents, both she and I played no small part in the shelter drama, Erin on the spiritual side, and I on the engineering side. I felt that if the prophecies were real, we should spare no expense, and we didn't. Erin gave the confirmations the engineers were looking for, and it became a runaway train of excess.

Twenty years later, now that we have the opportunity to reflect, this memoir should be seen as a cautionary tale. Rather than CUT members circling the wagons because they are uncomfortable, they should be willing to look in the mirror. They need to realize that it was their beliefs and their elevation of the "messenger" to a place of unquestioned authority that led to every abuse. It is the authority-based tradition of "gurus" and "masters" that was the essence of the problem.

Though Erin doesn't quite reach the same conclusion, it is to me the undeniable implication of her courageous book. Once we remove anything, including spiritual authority, from the check and balance of reasoned analysis, all bets are off. Once a person claims (and people accept) prophecy and "divine revelation," all manner of abuses and wrong turns can and will result.

Erin's book succeeds on all counts. It's a gripping story of our mother's downfall into paranoia, a cautionary tale about power and group dynamics, and a very personal memoir of Erin's struggles and triumph over adversity. As her brother, as a philosopher, and as a humanist, I'm proud beyond words.

Reading Seneca: Stoic Philosophy at Rome, by Brad Inwood

Brad Inwood presents a selection of his most influential essays on the philosophy of Seneca, the Roman Stoic thinker, statesman, and tragedian of the first century AD. Including two brand-new pieces, and a helpful introduction to orient the reader, this volume will be an essential guide for anyone seeking to understand Seneca's fertile, wide-ranging thought and its impact on subsequent generations.

In each of these essays Seneca is considered as a philosopher, but with as much account as possible taken of his life, his education, his intellectual and literary background, his career, and his self-presentation as an author. Seneca emerges as a discerning and well-read Stoic, with a strong inclination to think for himself in the context of an intellectual climate teeming with influences from other schools. Seneca's intellectual engagement with Platonism, Aristotelianism, and even with Epicureanism involved a wide range of substantial philosophical interests and concerns. His philosophy was indeed shaped by the fact that he was a Roman, but he was a true philosopher shaped by his culture rather than a Roman writer trying his hand at philosophical themes. The highly rhetorical character of his writing must be accounted for when reading his works, and when one does so the underlying philosophical themes stand out more clearly. While it is hard to generalize about an overall intellectual agenda or systematic philosophical method, key themes and strategies are evident. Inwood shows how Seneca's philosophical ingenium worked itself out in a fundamentally particularistic way as he pursued those aspects of Stoicism that engaged him most forcefully over his career.

The 24 Days Of Christmas by Linda Lael Miller

A Rose In Winter By Laura Florand

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Miller (Big Sky Wedding) anchors an enjoyable holiday collection with plenty of Christmas cheer but limited sparkle. In Carter's busy The Christmas Carousel, auction house owner Georgia refuses to sell her property to handsome investor Adam. But Adam is more than he seems, and a mysterious Christmas gift that arrives for Georgia gives her a chance to reconsider. Florand's A Rose in Winter is the steamiest entry: when American Ph.D. candidate Allegra decides to stay in Provence over the holidays, she connects in and out of bed with Raoul, an alpha male with a heart. Miller's The 24 Days of Christmas brings Addie back to her hometown of Pine Crossing and her ex-fiancé, Frank; their romantic reunion is upstaged by their family responsibilities. Martin's Reconstruction-era Christmas Angel is a historical oddball among contemporaries, but it stands out more for its tight story and intense romance, in which Southern belle Angel reunites with Joshua, her former love turned Union army doctor. The novellas' diversity makes for a satisfying, if not stellar, anthology. (Dec.)

5 stars for the first two stories ony
By DL
I bought this book because I love Laura Florand's books. Her story is the second one in the anthology. The first story is by Mary Carter. As far as I can tell, Mary Carter is a very new author. I liked the story she wrote. It's a bit fanciful, but then again, this is a Christmas romance anthology. The story is a 1 on a scale of 1 to 10 for heat. I'm curious if Mary Carter's other stories follow a similar trend. So, having finished that chaste but sweet story, I started on Laura Florand's entry.

If Mary Carter's story about a carousel was a 1 on the heat scale, Laura Florand's was a 10. It was surprising to me that the publisher/editor/someone? thought putting these stories back-to-back was a good idea. I didn't have a problem with it, but I could see some readers being surprised. It won't be surprising to anyone that reads my review history that I loved what Laura Florand wrote. I encourage any new readers that haven't read her work before to give this one a try. It is the first in a new series. She is known for her Chocolate series. The characters in this story know some of the characters from the Chocolate series, but this is paving the way for the Rose series. I liked it a lot. I loved the return to Provence, albeit in winter. Laura Florand also sets up what appears to be a plot arc (is that what it's called?) for the series with the meddling older relatives. I can't wait to see what's next!

As for the Linda Lael Miller and Kat Martin installments, I did not realize they were reprints. The Linda Lael Miller was ok, but it was familiar. I've probably read it before. The Kat Martin story was familiar too, so again, probably read it before. I cared for it the least...and I've been a Kat Martin fan for a long time. It was probably that her story was historical (post US Civil War time period) and didn't fit with the three contemporary stories. I read historical and contemporary romances equally as much, but I don't think they belong in an anthology together.

Having said all this, I will parrot the other reviewers. Buy this for Florand (and Carter). Now pardon me while I go look up Mary Carter's other amazon offerings since I already have all of Florand's.

The Christmas Carousel by Mary Carter
Georgia grew up with her sister and parents and every Christmas her dad would take her to the carousel. He ran the Trash and Treasures Barn and made a living at it.
She had met a sad girl one day and she was afraid to get on the ponies by herself so she held Georgia's hand. Later she learns the little sad girl died of leukemia. They left a box and a picture which has gone unopened.
They live in a RI town where the tourist dollar is large during the summer months. Years later her father has died and it's only her and her son, next door to the bakery running the treasures shop.
Her sister's husband has lost his job in CA and they want to cash in on selling the business that they own 1/2 of to the developers. Georgia with help from the other local businesses hopes to keep the developers away.
Others have made up their minds and Georgia has to sell and learns Adam is one she has to deal with. He soon explains how he knows her and he helps her open the big box from decades ago. Love learning of the RI facts as I am a native myself.
Love the connection and the charity to others of the carousel horse in this book.

By RTS
As a follower of Laura Florand's La Vie en Roses series, I was looking forward to this short story and discovering some authors in this anthology. Outside of the loose theme of trying to find a place that feels like home, these 4 stories could not be more divergent. I like anthologies because you get little gifts of sweet fun, however sometimes authors rush the details and leaves the reader trying to fill the gaps...which was true for all the stories.

1. Christmas Carousel by Mary Carter
Georgia has fond memories of riding a carousel with her father around Christmas. One year, she meets a dying girl named Cindy. Fast forward: Georgia's a widow with a son, runs an auction house in a sleepy old downtown which developers are trying to buy and make into a mall, then she receives a carousel horse from her deceased father for Christmas in front of one of the developers, who is Cindy's brother, Ben. Did you follow all that? Ben and Georgia decide to track down who actually sent the horse and get stuck in some back water area in Rhode Island during a snow storm. There was so much going on in this story, I couldn't feel any connection between Ben and Georgia outside of guilty gratitude that does not equate passion. 2 out of 5 stars.

2. A Rose in Winter by Laura Florand
Allegra is in the south of France for Christmas while she is researching for her PHD. Raoul is head of the African division of his Rosier family business but wants to come home. They have a one night stand, which leads them to a misunderstanding in the morning. As they confront each other, they both learn of each other's desire to feel at ease with themselves and their families. The beginning of this story was a bit stilted, but getting past all that, you see the heart of both Allegra and Raoul, along with some feisty Rosier family members who, hopefully with have books of their own. Steamiest of the 4 stories. 4 out of 5 stars.

3. 24 Days of Christmas by Linda Lael Miller originally published in 2004
Addie's world crashed down around her after an article she wrote had her fired and running away from LA to her home town on CO. Calling on her former fiancé, Frank, who is now the town Chief of Police and widow, she is trying to start over. Then her ex husband dumps her step son on her while he is away on his honeymoon. This story was the BEST of the 4 and really delved into what "home" means and if it can be found in a place or a person. Each of the characters were sweet and flawed. It made you want I make your own advent calendar to follow along. 5 stars!

4. Christmas Angel by Kat Martin originally published in 1997! Set is post Civil War Savannah. Angel never forgave her love, Josh for leaving her to fight for the North. Now he is back in his "blue belly Yank" uniform as a Dr. running the local, dilapidated hospital filled with wounded soldiers. I stopped reading this and couldn't finish. Southern Civil War settings are not my thing, but even so, I just couldn't get into the characters. I didn't care that she lost her plantation, or how they still felt tingly around each other. I am not sure how the publishers chose this story, but it was a DNF for me. 0 stars.

Overall, I would have bought this book for Laura Florand, but was lucky enough to receive an Advanced Reading Copy. I was pleasantly surprised by Ms. Miller's story, but the other 2 were a waste of time.

Reunion Flirts! 5 Romantic Short Stories (The Flirts! Short Stories Collections Book 7), by Lisa Scott

Where do you find secret crushes, old flames, and regret galore? At any class reunion, of course. Reunion Flirts! features five sweet, funny, romantic short stories, set at a ten-year high school reunion.
Each story is 9,000-12,000 words in length (technically, a novelette, but short story has a better ring.) These stories stand alone, but when read as a collection, they link together.
The stories include:

"Second Chance" (11,000 words)
Chelsea Hallman’s ex-boyfriend, Tripp McCall, is now a rich business tycoon, and she wants him back. Not for his money, but for his humor, his kindness, and his mesmerizing gray eyes. But when he offers to help organize their ten-year class reunion, Chelsea suspects he’s just trying to show her what she lost. Could he ever give her a second chance?

"Class Flirt" (10,000 words)
Martina Klein has worked hard to put the title of Class Flirt behind her, and she’s determined to show her classmates they were wrong about her. She brings her conservative co-worker Jackson along as the perfect date. When she arrives, old rumors start flying, and soon she only cares about one person’s opinion—Jackson’s. Could he ever be with her now that he knows the truth about her past?

"Crush" (12,000 words)
Cathy Blake has lusted over Peter Schmidt since freshman year, and she’s finally going to tell him how she feels at their ten-year high school reunion. But Cathy doesn’t know someone’s had a crush on her for years. And when Danny Patel shows up to confess his feelings to her, Cathy has to question what she really wants.

"My Best Friend's Girlfriend" (9,000 words)
Tate has secretly loved his best friend’s girlfriend, Alyssa, even before the two of them started dating. Now that they’re divorced, Tate’s wondering if it’s finally his chance to tell Alyssa the truth. Can Alyssa ever see him as more than a friend?

"Homecoming Queen" (12,000 words)
Country music star Lucy Jordan has no desire to come back to her ten-year high school reunion. The jerks in her class voted her Homecoming Queen as a joke. Plus, Lucy’s life is more screwed up than a sad country song. But she sneaks into the reunion to honor the memory of her late friend. And what she learns changes everything about her past and the possibilities for the future.

I'm impressed!
By Red Apple Reader
REUNION FLIRTS! by Lisa Scott is a delightful novella compilation of interconnected stories revolving around Boston's Jefferson Jousters class of 2002's ten-year reunion. I'm impressed with how varied the stories are...and how they include all types of kids...the popular ones, the nerds, the class flirt...and how their true selves were so much more obvious ten years post high school. The short stories told so much truth about human nature.

My short take on each of the five lightly interwoven tales:

CLASS FLIRT (3.5 stars): Martina has SO left high school behind. She may have been known as the class flirt...but she's worked hard to ditch the old image and stands up for herself. I loved seeing this strong, capable woman reclaim her dignity.

SECOND CHANCE (3 stars): Chelsea and Tripp were high school sweethearts...until Chelsea broke up with class-clown Tripp because she had lofty educational goals and Tripp...didn't. But now Tripp is a billionaire (self-made company genius; McCall Me Inc.) and has definitely made GOOD...and all he wants is another chance with Chelsea. I LOVE second chances themed stories. Rated PG.

CRUSH (4 stars): Cathy comes to the reunion with ONE purpose in mind...connecting with Class Most Desirable, Peter Schmidt. Little does she know, Dr. Danny Patel, MD has been sweet on her ever since band class when they were kids. I LOVED watching Cathy's eyes open to other possibilities. Rated PG-13.

MY BEST FRIEND'S GIRLFRIEND (4.5 stars): An absolutely marvelous Second Chances themed-story....Tate Ramsey has stayed in touch with Alyssa...even after she married his best friend...and even after that marriage fell apart. Alyssa's back at the reunion, determined to put on a brave face and let her ex-husband see she's happy, healthy, and getting along great without him. Tate just wants Cathy to see HIM.

HOMECOMING QUEEN (4 stars): Lucy Jordan comes to the reunion but keeps her distance and ensures no one notices her--and with good reason. She's a celebrity (county music star) who's suffered a horrible and disfiguring accident. She's not yet back on her feet, but feels she needs to at least observe her best friend (from high school)'s memorial. Lucy looks back on high school as a nightmare...she never fit in, never wanted to be what others expected of her, and ended up nominated for Homecoming Queen as a sick and cruel joke on the unpopular girl Lucy once was. Come to find out that whole episode with Homecoming Queen isn't as cut and dried as Lucy believed it to be. Joe Latham may have dated Leah (the now deceased best friend who's memorial was part of the reunion), and Lucy blames him for ruining her senior year....but when they end up spending quality time together--much to Lucy's dismay--she realizes he's a whole lot more than she ever thought him to be.

All in all, a charming, fun read. Kudos to the author. Recommended to fans of contemporary romance, particularly short stories and novellas.

This is a book of 5 stories about a 10 yr. reunion. Very enjoyable.
By denise222
The 1st book-Second Chance-is about Chelsea Hallman and how she is on the planning committee for the reunion. it is her job to get some reluctant people to the reunion. She also gets in touch with Tripp McCall who is her old crush and now the owner of his own multi-millionaire business. This is about the reconnection. Very good read.

Class Flirt is about the woman-Martina Klein (Parti Marti)-who was known as the one who "put out" because of sending her boyfriend a topless picture and since she wouldn't "put out" for him, his revenge was posting it on the internet. She tries to re-invent herself. she is now an accountant and needs a date for this reunion and invites a man (Jackson) from her office that seems just as "buttoned up" as she is. Boy is she in for a surprise!!!!!

Crush is about a woman, Cathy Blake, with a 10 year crush on a guy from high school who she thinks wrote her a poem and stuck it in her locker. She has been obsesssed with him for all these years. She then finds out who really wrote the poem and boy, do things change and her outlook on who is important!

My Best Friend's Girlfriend is about Alyssa White and her ex-husband's best friend and best man at their wedding. Tate Ramsey has been in love with her since before Kevin and she got together in high school. He wound up being the one to set them up by accident and never got his chance with her. Now 10 years later he sees her at the reunion and the feelings are still there just like they are every time they see each other. What a surprise when she finds out that Tate always loved her.

Homecoming Queen is about a wanna be country music star (Lucy Jordan) that is voted Homecoming Queen because the ballot box was stuffed to make fun of her. Joe Latham took the blame. He was Leah's boyfriend, Lucy's best friend. Lucy does make it as a star and then dropped out of the limelight and didn't feel comfortable going to the reunion but did anyway and stayed on the sidelines where she was hoping not to be seen only because they were paying tribute to her friend Leah, who had killed herself. Leah's boyfriend in school, Joe Latham, spotted her and convinced her to spend some time with him because he had some truths to discuss with her. She is very surprised by the revelations.

Nekrosius and Lithuanian Theatre (Artists and Issues in the Theatre), by Ludvika Apinyte Popenhagen

Eimuntas Nekrosius is a Lithuanian theatre director acclaimed by critics nationally and internationally. Belonging to the post-World War II generation of Eastern European directors, Nekrosius established his career during the tenure of the Soviet Socialist Regime and remains the most prominent metteur en scène in contemporary Lithuania. Nekrosius and his company of actors invent energetic movement sequences and poignant images where gestures and actions enhance or frame the text. This progressive mainstream theatre crosses cultural boundaries and does not depend on sociopolitical persuasions for its success. By creating innovative and alternative productions of globally recognized literary classics, such as Chekhov, Gogol, Pushkin, and Shakespeare, Nekrosius is one of the great directors of this century.

Review
"If this book had done no more than to introduce the work of the Lithuanian director Nekroius, a major innovator in the modern theatre, to those unaware of it elsewhere, it would have been a considerable service. But Ludvika Popenhagen brings to her study of the multiple levels of Nekroius' scenography a virtual history of the Lithuanian theater, also neglected, and an acute sense of affinities and differences between the 'scenic writing' of Nekroius and the aural and visual strategies of other significant figures on the world stage today. While defining Nekroius' specific role in the determination of a National Lithuanian Theatre, this book is also a discourse on the obstacles to, the struggle for, and the possibilities of a cultural transference. Ludvika Popenhagen, a Lithuanian born in Australia, knows something of this by nature and has the sensitivity of an experienced actress with the reflexes of a theorist." -- Herbert Blau, Distinguished Professor of English, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

"Ludvika Popenhagen's book provides an engaging and lively account of a contemporary director at work. This book is most valuable in that it documents successfully a field of theater scholarship that has to date been under-researched and neglected: the contribution made by Lithuanian artists to contemporary world culture." -- Helmut Bakaitis, Head of Directing, National Institute of Dramatic Art, Sydney
